Summary

Under general supervision of the Local Health Director, the Intake Coordinator performs administrative and programmatic work in support of the County’s Animal Welfare Services Division. The Intake Coordinator serves as the first point of contact for members of the public surrendering, reclaiming, adopting, or seeking assistance with animals, ensuring that the intake and release processes are efficient, compassionate, and compliant with department policies and applicable regulations.

Position Duties

Essential Functions


  • Coordinates and processes animal intakes, including stray, surrendered, transferred, and seized animals.
  • Collects and accurately enters information into shelter management software at the time of intake or release.
  • Conducts initial health and behavioral assessments to ensure appropriate placement and care.
  • Assists with the release of animals to adopters, fosters, or reclaiming owners by verifying documentation and ensuring proper counseling.
  • Communicates policies and procedures clearly and compassionately to the public.
  • Collaborates with veterinary staff, animal care teams, and outreach staff to ensure appropriate animal placement.
  • Maintains accurate records and documentation to support data tracking and reporting requirements Respond to questions from patrons, and provide information about animals, such as behavior, habitat, breeding habits, or facility activities.
  • Responsible for animal care like grooming, feeding, walking, cleaning or medical care.
  • Collects and records animal information, such as weight, size, physical condition, treatments received, medications given, and food intake. Provides excellent customer service in sensitive and emotionally charged situations.

 

Responsibilities


  • Performs general clerical duties including answering the telephone, filing and typing correspondence
  • Assists with reunification of lost pets and their owners.
  • Supports adoption and fosters placement processes, including reviewing applications, facilitating meet-and-greets, and processing release paperwork.
  • Ensures cleanliness and organization of intake and release areas.
  • Maintains confidentiality of records and client interactions.
  • Participates in departmental training, staff meetings, and community outreach efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Graduation from high school or GED.
  • At least 1–2 years of experience in animal shelter operations, adoptions, veterinary services, or related public-facing roles.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may substitute.
  • Preference for candidates with coursework or training in animal welfare, veterinary assistance, or shelter management.

Other Qualifications

Other Qualifications, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license.
  • Animal handling training and shelter management software experience (preferred)
  • Certification in Animal Welfare, Euthanasia Technician, or Veterinary Assistant desirable.
