About the Department

The Senior Staff Accountant is primarily responsible for the areas of grant accounting, fixed asset accounting, budget maintenance, payroll validation process, and assists with general ledger maintenance. This position will assist the Accounting Manager, Comptroller, and CFO in various reporting functions to management, state agencies, auditors, and the Board.


This position serves as the primary lead for federal and state grant reporting, fixed asset management, and budget inquiries. It acts as a key financial resource to leadership and provides oversight to Staff Accountants, ensuring accuracy and compliance in all financial functions.  This position requires expertise in US generally accepted accounting principles.   This position is required to maintain a working knowledge of federal, state, and college policies and procedures.   


This position is located at the main campus, but may report to all Blue Ridge CTC locations as required to meet the needs of the position. This position will include managing a virtual office as needed.

Position Duties

  • Grant Accounting
    • Review grant agreements, set up grants and budget, work with grant administrator for spending plan, collaborate with various departments to meet all state and federal grant financial reporting requirements, assist with annual SEFA preparation.
  • Fixed Asset Management
    • Review and assist with fixed asset setup and disposal, monthly reconciliation, asset tagging, and oversee annual inventory count
  • Budget Maintenance
    • Assist in the annual budget development, work with internal customers and the state for budget issues, support staff accountants with budget setup and amendments, provide budget analyses on an as needed basis.
  • Payroll Validation
    • Review master payroll file throughout the year for payroll changes for validation purposes, ensure benefits are appropriately deducted, work with CFO to prepare annual payroll budget
  • General Accounting
    • Prepare and approve journal entries, prepare and approve monthly and annual reconciliations, review and submit monthly sales tax return, assist with financial reporting and analysis as needed by the CFO, Comptroller, or other department heads, 
    • Assist with year-end processes, provide audit support to include detailed analyses, reconciliations, and preparation of schedules, as designated by Comptroller or CFO, work closely with external auditors.
    • Create, maintain, and review procedure manuals for functions under the position's purview
    • Other financial analyses and special projects may be assigned by the Accounting Manager, Comptroller, or CFO
  • Supervise Staff Accountants in all duties and assist covering that role in the event of absence of those employees
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required. 

  • Master’s degree or CPA preferred. 

Experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in general accounting required with demonstrated knowledge in grants, fixed assets, and budget support preferred.

  • 1-2 years supervisory experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Technical Expertise

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to work with complex formulas, pivot tables, and reconciliation tools.
  • Strong working knowledge of general ledger systems, fund accounting, and financial reporting processes.
  • Familiarity with fixed asset accounting, grant reporting, and payroll-related financial entries.
  • Ability to apply accounting principles to ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations.

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze financial data and perform reconciliations accurately and efficiently.
  • Skill in identifying discrepancies and resolving financial issues through logical investigation and data validation.
  • Capacity to handle multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet competing deadlines.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • Ability to communicate financial concepts and budget requirements clearly to non-financial staff and department leaders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the preparation of financial summaries and audit schedules.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with peers, supervisors, and cross-departmental stakeholders.

Leadership and Supervisory Skills

  • Ability to oversee and support Staff Accountants, including training, delegation, and quality review of work.
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead by example, take initiative, and ensure continuity of financial operations in staff absences.

Organizational Skills

  • Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records, meet deadlines, and support audits.
  • Ability to develop, maintain, and review procedure manuals and documentation for processes under the role’s purview.
