Other Conditions:
General funds, to begin approximately November 2025, pending availability of funds and actual staffing requirements. Assignment may include evening and weekend work and travel between Hilo, West Hawaii and other off-Site locations. Position may be converted from 9 to 11 months or 11 to 9 months based on operational needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversees the daily operations of the basic needs support program, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and student success priorities.
- Conducts individualized assessments and provides case management for students experiencing basic needs insecurity, including challenges related to food, housing, transportation, mental wellness, and financial hardship.
- Provides academic and career counseling, and personal support, to help students overcome barriers to success.
- Connects students to and collaborates with on-campus and community-based resources; track referrals and monitor progress to ensure coordinated, student-centered support.
- Supervises, trains, and supports peer mentors who assist in outreach, programming, and student engagement related to academic, basic needs, and wellness.
- Integrates basic needs support into academic success strategies, student development initiatives, and retention-focused programming.
- Coordinates core basic needs services such as food pantry operations, emergency aid distribution, housing and transportation referrals, and wellness initiatives.
- Develops and maintains partnerships with local organizations and service providers to expand available resources and address gaps in support.
- Delivers workshops focused on basic needs, financial wellness, and well-being, promoting help-seeking behaviors and reducing associated stigma.
- Leads program evaluation by collecting data, tracking outcomes, and preparing reports for internal use and external partners.
- Oversees the program budget, ensuring effective use of resources and alignment with program goals.
- Engages in regular professional development to stay current on best practices, compliance standards, and evolving student needs.
- Participates in department, college and community services as appropriate.
- Develops and maintains an approved program of professional self-improvement activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's in Counseling and Guidance, Counseling Psychology, College Student Personnel Services, Human Resources (to include both CTAHR and Personnel), Communications or related field.
- OR Bachelors in Counseling and Guidance, Counseling Psychology, College Student Personnel Services, Human Resources (to including both CTAHR and Personnel), Communications or related field and 3 years of related work experience
Related fields include: Education (to include all degrees in this field), Family Resources, Human Development, Psychology (to include all degrees in this field), Public Health, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Sociology, and Student Services Personnel.)
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience providing case management to multicultural, and at-risk student populations, including those with disabilities and learning differences.
- Strong understanding of the challenges faced by underrepresented groups, including minorities, students with disabilities, and non-traditional learners.
- Proven ability to identify factors impacting student achievement and retention, and to develop targeted support strategies.
- Skilled in engaging at-risk and underprepared students, building confidence, and promoting success through problem-solving, self-awareness, and accountability.
- Academic advising and counseling experience, with a preference for community college settings.
- Background in academic coaching, career/life counseling, or vocational guidance within educational institutions.
- Demonstrated teaching experience.
- Experience with assessment planning, implementation, and analysis.
- Effective at building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external partners.
- Demonstrated commitment and/or experience supporting the success of students.
