The Terrestrial Branch develops and implements strategies and programs to promote the informed management and conservation of Colorado’s terrestrial wildlife resources and their habitats. To conserve and perpetuate the terrestrial wildlife populations and their habitats for present and future generations. To provide an expert and measured approach to the management of Colorado’s wildlife and their habitats. Lead CPW in science-based terrestrial wildlife and habitat conservation. To conserve terrestrial wildlife populations and habitats for the continued sustainable use benefit and enjoyment of Colorado’s residents and visitors for present and future generations. To perpetuate robust and diverse wildlife populations and habitats creating and using best available science to inform conservation and management. Wildlife Health conducts disease monitoring and surveillance for all terrestrial wildlife species, as well as rigorous scientific-based original research deemed valuable to CPW in order to better understand and enhance the health, management, and conservation of Colorado’s terrestrial wildlife resources; the program also provides field and laboratory services and training to CPW staff, as well as captive wildlife research support and captive wildlife holding for other CPW research and management programs.

Position Duties

This position works both with professional staff and independently to facilitate and provide professional technical support for field services and investigations conducted by the Division’s field veterinarian and the Wildlife Health Program’s professional staff.  The position provides professional technical assistance and assists with training for management and research projects involving a wide variety of mammalian and avian species in various locations throughout Colorado, particularly as related to logistics of capturing, handling, and sampling various wildlife species. The position develops and maintains computerized databases and record-keeping systems supporting new and ongoing projects, and works with others to develop, evaluate, and conduct projects to improve overall understanding and management of important wildlife health problems. The position acquires, evaluates, and maintains field equipment needed for programmatic operations and oversees the wildlife health program vehicle fleet.

Specific duties include but are not limited to: 

Technical Support for Field Services and Research:
Provide professional and technical back-up for field services and investigations conducted by the Division’s Wildlife Health Program professional staff. This task requires that the incumbent be well versed in the biology of a wide range of wildlife species and best approaches for capturing, handling, and sampling these species. 
Duties include: 
1) Working directly with or independent of professional staff on field studies and service projects undertaken by the Wildlife Health Program (e.g., disease management, disease outbreak investigations, capture and/or translocation operations), including data collection and management; 
2) Anticipating and planning for service- or project-specific needs and solving problems related to meeting those needs; 
3) Leading work of and participating with temporary employees and volunteers in preparing for and completing project support work; 
4) Traveling to various field locations throughout Colorado as needed; 
5) Conferring with wildlife health and other agency staff to schedule work to most effectively and efficiently meet needs.

Captive Wildlife Handling and Management:
Provides assistance with captive wildlife handling and management by:
1) Assisting with routine captive animal handling for veterinary care and management; 
2) Preparing and coordinating supplies and equipment needs for captive animal handling; 
3) Assisting with various aspects of animal care such as feeding and cleaning enclosures during staff shortages; 
4) Assisting with facility maintenance projects such as repairing fences or equipment, managing grounds etc.

Capture and Handling Training:
Provide technical training for other field involving a wide variety of mammalian and avian species particularly as related to logistics of capturing, handling, and sampling various wildlife species, by: 
1) Conducting or assisting with on and off site training during field services and investigations conducted by the Wildlife Health Program’s professional staff; 
2
) Traveling to various locations in the state of Colorado to calibrate capture equipment, provide technical equipment-based training, and distribute capture supplies. This task requires that the incumbent be well versed in various capture and handling methods used for wildlife species in Colorado.

Maintaining Supplies and Equipment:
Provide professional and logistical back-up for field services and investigations conducted by the Wildlife Health Program’s professional staff by:
1) Acquiring, evaluating, and maintaining field supplies and equipment needed for programmatic services and operations; 
2) Maintaining the Wildlife Health Program’s vehicles and ensuring they are equipped with all necessary modifications for field use; 
3) Following agency, state, and federal rules, policies and guidelines. Provide professional and logistical back-up for field services and investigations conducted by the Division’s veterinary staff and the Wildlife Health Program’s professional staff by:
  • 1) Acquiring, evaluating, and maintaining field supplies and equipment needed for programmatic services and operations; 
  • 2) Following agency, state, and federal rules, policies and guidelines.
Maintain Records and Study Design:
Develop and maintain computerized databases and record-keeping systems supporting new and ongoing services and projects, manage and enter data, and prepare data summaries. Work and/or collaborate with veterinary and professional staff in designing, conducting, and reporting on a variety of field investigations or scientific experiments on a wide range of study topics.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience Only:

Four (4) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position

OR 

Education and Experience: 

A combination of related education in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Biology, Zoology/Animal Sciences and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to four (4) years

Preferred Qualifications
  • Current or former State experience relevant to this position.
  • Experience operating equipment such as bobcat, skid steer, toolcat and various attachments.
  • Experience working in a veterinary clinic or similar setting.
 Required Competencies
  • High level of written and oral communications.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in team settings.
  • Ability to drive a 4WD vehicle and pull a trailer in various weather conditions in Colorado.
  • Experience with capture and handling of North American terrestrial wildlife species.
  • Experience in chemical immobilization of wildlife.
  • Experience utilizing firearms.
Conditions of Employment
  • Use, Handling or Exposure to hazardous materials-Employee will be exposed to biological materials potentially containing infectious diseases, as well as formalin, a hazardous chemical and will also handle potent chemical immobilization drugs.
  • Use of Firearms or other weapons - Needed for emergency euthanasia. Background check may be necessary.
  • Travel – As needed to provide statewide field services.
  • Must be able to travel extensively to conduct field research.  May require travel of several weeks at a time.
  • Duties may include exposure to potent immobilization drugs, and some field operations or other research may include exposure to infectious diseases.
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose the information on the application and provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify their application from the current position.  (Please Note: Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with DNR).
  • Pursuant to the DNR-120 Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive, any worker who will be expected to drive a State-owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver license prior to driving any State-owned vehicle. 

    To be compliant with the new fleet vehicle policy, Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be pulled for review for workers who: 

    • Have an assigned State fleet vehicle

    • Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position

    • Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle
