Job Title: Superintendent
Location: Rhode Island
Hourly Rate: Based on Experience

Summary: The Superintendent is responsible for supervising and coordinating the activities of skilled trade workers and subcontractors involved in ship construction, repair, overhaul, and conversion projects. This role ensures that all work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality and compliance with maritime regulations and client specifications.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise day-to-day operations for assigned craft (e.g., welding, pipefitting, electrical, painting, joinery, outfitting) across multiple shipbuilding or ship repair projects.
  • Lead craft teams in interpreting ship specifications, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Ensure all work complies with ABS, NAVSEA, USCG, or other applicable maritime standards and shipyard regulations.
  • Monitor productivity, quality, and progress to ensure adherence to production schedules and budget targets.
  • Plan and allocate labor, materials, tools, and equipment to optimize work performance.
  • Coordinate with engineering, planning, QA/QC, safety, and logistics teams to align work execution with project goals.
  • Conduct safety toolbox talks and enforce shipyard safety protocols and OSHA regulations.
  • Identify and address technical and logistical challenges to avoid schedule delays.
  • Maintain accurate reports on manpower, progress, materials, delays, and issues.
  • Mentor and develop craft leads, foremen, and junior employees to build strong, skilled teams.
  • Participate in production planning meetings and provide input on workforce planning and resource allocation.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational/technical training in shipbuilding trades preferred.
  • 5–10 years of experience in shipbuilding or ship repair, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or foreman role.
  • Deep understanding of craft-specific processes (e.g., welding, structural fitting, pipe installation, etc.) in the marine environment.
  • Skills & Competencies:
  • Strong knowledge of shipbuilding construction methods, practices, and sequencing.
  • Ability to read and interpret shipbuilding specifications, drawings, and engineering documents.
  • Familiarity with maritime regulatory standards (e.g., ABS, NAVSEA, USCG, SOLAS).
  • Effective leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, production-driven environment.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office and production tracking software (e.g., AVEVA, ShipConstructor, or yard-specific systems).

Certifications:
  • OSHA 30 Maritime Safety Certification (preferred or required depending on yard)
  • First Aid/CPR
  • NCCER, AWS, or similar trade certification is a plus

Working Conditions:
  • Work performed in a shipyard environment including onboard vessels, in confined spaces, and at heights.
  • Exposure to noise, heat, cold, dust, and potentially hazardous materials.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • May involve extended shifts, weekends, or night work to meet production goals.
  • Travel between facilities or vessels may be required.
