This position is the Bryan District Lab Lead and will serve as the District contact for material testing. Knowledge of materials, construction, trains others, performs advanced material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives.  Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

  • Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management.
  • Assists in overseeing district laboratory operations and monitoring material testing requirements and results for compliance with specifications.
  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors, material producers and suppliers and field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
  • May serve as a lead worker by serving as a resource for complex questions; presenting workflow and operational updates to the supervisor/manager; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operations coverage.
  • Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors.
  • Handles problem calls from producers, plant inspectors and construction project field personnel.
  • Informs plant personnel of material or production problems, rejects substandard material and assists in determining cause for material problems.
  • Plans, coordinates, assigns, monitors and reviews the work of technical employees.
  • Prepares and maintains inspection or test reports and issues material reports.
  •  Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience

M/P Inspector III: 2 years of experience in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related work.

M/P Inspector IV: 3 years of experience in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related work.

 (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

 
Competencies:

Extensive knowledge of:

  • Materials design, specifications and applications

  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • Applicable testing methods, processes and procedures
  • Laboratory testing procedures and methodologies
  • Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
  • Soil types

     


    Considerable knowledge of:

  • Calibrating equipment
  • Giving attention to detail and reviewing information to identify any errors and problems; ensuring consistency and clarity of information
  • Scheduling work assignments
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

    Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
