Primary Purpose: Facilitate the effective operation of the department and assume responsibility for preparing assigned tasks efficiently and accurately.
Qualifications: Education/Certification: High School Diploma or GED Valid Texas Driver’s License Bilingual Paraprofessional Certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work with vast array of people in community and education institutions Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish Excellent public relations skills High level of attention to detail Experience with administration of Oral Language Assessments (e.g. Woodcock Muñoz) Demonstrated ability to meet important deadlines
Experience: One-year experience in a professional office environment.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Perform routine office, secretarial, and clerical tasks including maintenance of a complete filing system. 2. Receive and direct incoming calls, take reliable messages, and route to appropriate staff. 3. Act as liaison between WISD campuses and parents to set up and interpret at LPAC meetings. 4. Use state PEIMS record keeping system to assist with inputting data pertaining to LEP students. 5. Assist campuses in preparation of LPAC documents. 6. Utilize the ELLevation data input system to assist with data input for LEP students. 7. Assist the Bilingual Assessor with test administrations of the Oral Proficiency Test (e.g. Woodcock-Muñoz) on campuses for identification and annual review. 8. Assist the Bilingual Assessor with the scoring of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) test required for students upon testing students for entry into Bilingual/ESL Program and end of the school year. 9. Assist with scoring and entering of assessment protocol information. 10. Create and maintain in-house LPAC folders for new and existing students to ensure they are current and contain all required documents per district, state, and Federal guidelines. 11. Maintain current documentation for LEP students that meets district, state, and Federal guidelines for documentation. 12. Assist the Bilingual Director and department Content Specialists during Professional Development sessions and workshops as needed. 13. Assist with translations such as but not limited to:
Notes/letters to parents of LEP students
District Assessments (from English to Spanish)
Brochures for the English Learners Department
14. Communicate with parents on behalf of campuses. 15. Promote positive departmental and community relations through cordial, effective communication, parent conferences, and English Learner Parent Advisory Council. 16. Interpret for ARD meetings as needed. 17. Comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) at all times when communicating about LEP students or handling student records. 18. Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, parents, students, and community. 19. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills. 20. Ensures confidentiality as required. 21. Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions, fast pace, working with several projects at once. Working with diverse population. District wide travel. At times may need to work evenings and/or weekends for special department or district related events. Use of Dell and Macintosh computers and related equipment.
