At Ports America, the Assistant Operations Manager – Planning is responsible for planning container stowage operations for vessels to achieve both maximum utilizations required of Terminal customers/clients and terminal resources.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Liaise with steamship line planners to obtain optimum stowage for PAC vessel operations.  This includes but is not limited to minimizing below deck work with insufficient moves, working over 4+ high on decks of vessels, and excessive crane boom ups.
  • Plan vessel operations to reflect yard layout of export cargo to ensure smooth working of cargo with little to no re-handling of containers. 
  • Prepare discharge and load sequences to minimize wasted motion for the crane operator and ensure efficient loading/discharge of containers.
  • Identify and plan crane splits to ensure earliest possible finish of the steamship line’s vessel.
  • Maximize Crane Density on vessels of 1000+ moves.
  • Prepare “order of work” schedules in conjunction with the relevant vessel superintendent.
  • Understand and ensure any ILA contractual items are handled effectively through proper planning and ordering for the vessel operation.
  • Monitor and plan import space availability
  • Continuously monitor yard plan to ensure export containers/import containers are handled and loaded correctly
  • Ensure that the Company Safety & Environment policy and procedures are observed as well as all relevant safety legislation and the provisions of the relevant Health and Safety & Environmental Acts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Working Attributes:       

  • Working on a ship and in a yard. 
  • The environment may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast moving heavy equipment.
  • Required to observe all safety and health requirements for container terminal environment
  • The ability to work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions
  • The ability to work in an environment with moving objects and machinery

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2+ years of terminal operations experience in Planning and Stevedoring Operations.
  • Obtain and maintain TWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Card) issued by the Department of Homeland Security
  • Valid US Driver's License

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher
  • Experience with related union contracts and managing labor.
  • Experience with computerized operating systems.
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations, and related industry governmental regulations.
  • High degree of computer literacy in Terminal Operating Systems (i.e. NAVIS SPARCS/N4, Tideworks, etc…).
  • Creative thinking to resolve difficult and complex situations.
  • Sense of Urgency & Self-Starter Mentality 
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • High level of planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional time management, due to fast moving, demanding work environment.
