PROJECT TITLE : "Improvement of the fatigue performance of next generation aerospace aluminium alloys"
The internship takes place in the context of the development of new Al-Cu-Li and conventional alloys for the aerospace industry, and the understanding of relationships between processes, microstructure and properties.
The project has several components:
- Optimization and exploitation of a quantitative fractography method to analyze first stage of fatigue on a set of alloys
- Comparison of the behavior of short and long cracks in the near threshold region
- Identification of surface treatment conditions optimizing the compromise between fatigue and corrosion resistance on Al-Cu-Li alloys
The role of the intern will consist, after a first phase of training in our trades and tools, to define and lead a trial plan in collaboration with the technicians and specialists of the lab. It includes the definition of the fatigue and corrosion tests to perform, the characterization of the surface quality of the specimens, the optimization of a testing procedure, and the observation of fracture surfaces with a SEM. All characterizations aim to better understand the fatigue initiation performance and mechanisms in new Al-Cu-Li and conventional alloys, and to propose optimized finishing surface treatments for the alloys developed for the wing of the next commercial aircraft.
The intern will work within the metallurgy team and will be supervised by two R&D engineers specializing in Al-Cu-Li and conventional alloy development.
