The University of Southern Maine is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Library Specialized Collections Processor to support the ongoing arrangement, description, and access of materials, with a focus on our Special Collections Judaica Collection and our Franco-American Collection. This position will work 50% time at the Special Collections Glickman Family Library on the Portland Campus, and 50% time at the Franco-American Collection on the Lewiston-Auburn Campus. This position plays a key role in establishing both physical and intellectual control over new and legacy collections, including materials of cultural, historical, and community significance.

This position will involve working with materials such as the Judaica Collections, Beliveau papers (large collection of professional materials from a local lawyer, judge, and justice), Franco-American Collection institutional records, Franco-American Collection Vincent Leblanc Survey Maps, among others.

Key responsibilities include:

Special Collections

  • Inventory and organize newly acquired collections, including Judaica materials.
  • Create basic intellectual and physical control of archival collections.
  • Draft and input detailed finding aids into ArchivesSpace, including narrative histories and folder-level descriptions.
  • Safely rehouse and label materials to meet preservation best practices.
  • Create and schedule social media content highlighting “new finds” and collection highlights.

Franco-American Collection

  • Process the Beliveau Papers: organize materials by series, label and inventory folders, and describe contents for a finding aid on ArchivesSpace.
  • Assess and document the physical condition of materials; set aside items needing conservation.
  • Develop workflows for potential conservation and digitization projects related to the Beliveau Papers.
  • Process additional collections, including:
    • Franco-American Collection Institutional Records
    • Vincent Leblanc Survey Maps
  • Create and schedule social media content highlighting “new finds” and collection highlights.
  • Curate and install a public-facing window exhibit using items from the Beliveau Papers.

Located on our Portland and Lewiston-Auburn campuses, this is a full-time, hourly, fixed length, two-year appointment position that will pay $19.61/hour for a new hire or the appropriate transfer rate for a current employee with the University of Maine System.

Required Qualifications:

  • 60 credits or more of higher education or equivalent work experience and training; AND archival processing experience.
  • Familiarity with archival description standards and best practices (e.g., DACS).
  • Strong organizational and written communication skills. 
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with learning new technologies.
