TEST DATE 10/25/2025 - If you are not yet certified, please be sure to note on your application that you are in school and when the projected date of completion is. Supervision is provided by a Fire Captain, and in some cases, a chief officer.

Paramedic Certification Pay is an additional $2,750.00 per year.

Position Duties
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
- Administers emergency medical services to ill/injured persons consistent with the level authorized by the Texas Department of State Health Services certification, established medical protocols, and standard operating procedures.
- Follows established universal health precautions in the treatment and care of patients.
- Works indoors and outdoors, subject to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, hazardous conditions, and intermittent exposure to dust, fumes, and loud noise intensity.
- Maintains good standing with Medical Director.
- Passes all required tests administered by the Medical Director or his/her agents including annual protocol tests and card course assessments.
- Participates in physical fitness training per department policy.
- Conducts public education activities that may include citizens’ fire academy, birthday parties, block parties, station tours, etc.
- Assists in the development and presentation of training related to EMS and special operations.
- Learns streets and routes within the city and surrounding areas to include the location of medical facilities to ensure quick response times.
- Attends scheduled training necessary to maintain EMS certification and all other required certifications.
- Participates in the testing, cleaning, and maintenance of facilities, grounds, equipment, apparatus, and hydrants to ensure proper care and maintenance.
- Participates in and conducts pre-incident planning of high occupancy and commercial businesses to identify possible fire and life safety hazards.
- May be required to work shift and non-shift schedules including weekends, holidays, on-call, and extended hours in emergency, disaster, or other situations influenced by heavy workloads or staffing difficulties.
- Completes all routine paperwork and reports in a timely manner as required.
- Studies technical materials on equipment operation to improve or maintain an effective level of performance.
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours.
- Responds to requests and inquiries from the public, other department personnel, and other City departments.
- Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
- Orientation period is a full 12 months from date of hire.
- Performs as a responsible steward of the public trust and strives for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all.
- Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co-workers, and others.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.
- Performs fire suppression functions including rescue, deploying and operating hose, ventilating roofs, performing salvage work during and after fires, and other related tasks associated with fire suppression.
- Assists in the development and presentation of training related to fire.
- Attends scheduled training necessary to maintain fire certification.
- Studies technical materials on fire suppression and fire prevention to improve or maintain an effective level of performance.
- May be assigned to a step-up of two ranks above current position or any acting assignment as deemed necessary by the Fire Chief. When assigned to a step-up or acting position, performs all duties and responsibilities of the role assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED certificate.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Valid Class C Driver's License, with clear driving record. Must have Texas Driver's License within 30 days of hire. Must possess a valid Texas Class B Exempt Driver’s License within six months of employment.
- Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management.
Certification as an EMT-Basic or Paramedic through the Texas Department of State Health Services. Full-time employees must be certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services as a paramedic. Employees hired as an EMT will be required to attend and successfully complete a paramedic-training program, pass the National Registry Paramedic certification exam, maintain Paramedic certification with the Texas Department of State Health Services, and remain authorized to function as a paramedic by the Medical Director. An employee will be given six (6) months and/or three (3) attempts to pass the National Registry Paramedic certification exam upon successful completion of paramedic school. If the employee currently possesses a paramedic certification, he/she will be eligible to receive paramedic certification pay. Certification as a Basic Structural Firefighter through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.

- May be subject to exposure to extreme temperatures, extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, toxic fumes, unstable buildings and structures, air and water borne pathogens, infectious diseases, and extreme heat
- May be exposed to hostile, angry, or emotional citizens, patients, and business owners.
- May be subject to wearing full protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus for extended periods to enter burning and smoke filled buildings.
PHYSICAL STRENGTH REQUIRED:
