About the Department

Partners with deputies to provide the community with initial on-scene de-escalation, assessment, and clinical intervention, refers secondary linkage to supports and resources for individuals experiencing a mental health or substance abuse-related crisis, provides outreach, referrals, and follow-up with community members affected by behavioral health issues.

Position Duties

  • Independently travels to respond with deputies to designated sites within the community, including private homes.
  • Responds jointly with Pueblo County Sheriff's Office deputies in initiating actions to resolve the crisis.
  • Practices trauma-informed care approaches to minimize the risk of re-traumatization of the client and family.
  • Works under pressure in crisis situations.
  • Provides education and options regarding available behavioral health supports.
  • Determines clinically appropriate dispositions to the least restrictive environment necessary to ensure the safety of the consumer, family, and the community.
  • Evaluates an individual's need for involuntary emergency mental health treatment (“mental health holds”) and places individuals on involuntary holds in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.
  • Accurately documents all client contacts and other pertinent clinical information.
  • Refers to appropriate resources and acts as a liaison with community agencies, service providers, and other support systems.
  • Gathers and manages information on services, referrals, and follow-ups: provides monthly statistical updates on the population being served. Attends staff meetings, in-service and peer reviews, and professional conferences as requested/required. Stays abreast with license and/or certification requirements to perform the essential functions of the job.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.   A minimum of three (3) years of experience in Mental Health Treatment or Human Services is required.  LPC or LCSW from an approved agency or program is required. One of the following three (3) education qualifications is required:

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling from a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) approved program or equivalent -OR- 
  • Master’s Degree in Psychology, Sociology or related field with a Doctorate Degree from a CACREP approved program or equivalent -OR-
  • Master’s Degree in Social Work from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) approved program or equivalent.


*The substitution of any combination of relevant and related education, training, and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability may be considered.


The selection process includes, but is not limited to, an interview. Prior to employment, candidates will complete a background investigation, polygraph examination, and physical examination to include a drug screen. The expected duration of the selection process will not normally exceed two months. Candidates not selected may reapply in the future.  This posting may be used to fill multiple openings.
