About the Department
This position is responsible for the quality assurance of the day-to-day operations of Animal Services, including ensuring proper animal care, well-being, and customer service responsibilities. This position may assist with the supervision of Animal Care Attendants and other lower-level staff and volunteers. Work is carried out under the general supervision of higher-level staff. Related duties are performed as required.
A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three. Position Duties
- Assists with hiring, training, and providing supervision to support Animal Care Attendants and other staff and volunteers as needed;
- Assists with reunifying lost animals with their owners;
- Collects data and enters related program metrics and participation into program databases;
- Runs regular reports to monitor program tasks and impact;
- Supports all of the shelter operations and animal husbandry, including assisting with medical care and attending administrative meetings;
- Ensures that customer service standards are met during all client interactions, including in person, on the phone, via email, and on social media;
- Performs or assists with euthanasia of both in-shelter animals and other animal euthanasia requests;
- Administers medications and vaccines and performs blood draws as needed;
- Assists with ordering supplies;
- Attends required trainings;
- Observes all safety rules and regulations;
- Maintains positive relationships with other personnel and customers;
- May operate a vehicle to transport animals and pick up shelter supplies;
- Maintains interior and exterior of facility for the safety of employees and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or Equivalent; PLUS
Two (2) years of full-time experience (or part-time equivalent) working at an animal shelter, animal hospital, animal boarding facility, or other similar environment involving the care and handling of animals
Note:
Equivalent verifiable volunteer experience will be accepted in lieu of paid experience if a start date, end date, and hours worked per week are included.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a valid New York State Class D Operator’s license at time of appointment. This must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
- A certification to euthanize animals, issued by the New York State Department of Health, must be obtained within one (1) year of appointment. This certification must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
