Title: Field Technician (Part-time, Sunday - Wednesday 7am-1:30pm)

Reports to: Field Operations Supervisor

Founded in 2014, Bicycle Transit Systems (Bike Transit) is a woman-owned business that operates and manages bike share programs nation-wide along with customer service call center. Our mission is to operate bike share systems that create connections in our communities and protect our planet.  Bike Transit employees provide safe, seamless, reliable, and memorable customer experiences, and create mutually-rewarding relationships with our riders, suppliers, and clients. We are currently looking for a dedicated Field Technician to join our team! 

The Field Technician (Tech) will assist with the maintenance of stations and bikes. The Field Tech will perform routine station and bike maintenance, cleaning, balancing of bikes, and station installations. Field Techs will work under the guidance of the Field Operations Supervisor to ensure that all stations and bicycles are maintained and cleaned in accordance with our routine maintenance schedule. Field Techs will respond to system balancing needs on a proactive and reactive basis.  Field Techs will be courteous drivers who understand the importance of safe driving.

Core Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain and repair mechanical and electronic components of bikes as needed to manufacturer specifications..
  • Perform preventative maintenance.  
  • Drive a Ford Transit or equivalent extended wheelbase van to complete daily tasks.  
  • Distribute bicycles throughout the system to ensure bike stations are appropriately stocked.  
  • Collect bicycles requiring in-shop repair work.  
  • Inspect and ensure bike stations are safe, clean, and operating properly  
  • Remove graffiti, stickers, and grime from stations. 
  • Maintain and repair mechanical and electronic components of bikes as needed to manufacturer specifications..
  • Perform preventative maintenance. 
  • Maintain stations (troubleshooting, replacing parts, swapping batteries, cleaning) in accordance with company policy and standard operating procedures (SOP’s).   
  • Complete service records for all work performed in accordance with company SOP’s.
  • Assist with bike and bike station deployment and redeployment.   
  • Interact with bike share passholders and the public in a friendly and professional manner.  
  • Receive and follow task directions provided by the General Manager   
  • Give and receive feedback to other team members.  
  • Other duties as assigned.  

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Open and close warehouse, as assigned. 
  • Assist in assembly, maintenance, and repair fleet of bicycles for bike share system. 
  • Assist as needed for annual bike refurbishment 
  • Conduct monthly safety checks on bike fleet in warehouse and outside. 
  • Communicate with General Manager about van mechanical and safety issues.
  • Communicate with General Manager to affect improvements. 
  • Give and receive feedback to other team members. 
  • In warehouse bicycle repairs, builds, and refurbishments. 

Daily Tasks:  

  • Check Fiix for any assigned, pending, or late tasks. 
  • Check in and communicate continuously with General Manager on prioritization for balancing, station maintenance, and other assigned duties and tickets. 
  • Clean station and bicycles during each station visit.  
  • When out in the field, quick inspection of station (ex: Check Dock, digitizer, CC reader, etc). 

Weekly Tasks: 

  • Clean facility.
  • Clean vehicles.
  • Test batteries.
  • Test “malfunctioning” hardware.
  • Take inventory of all supplies.
  • Conduct field safety checks on bikes at stations. 
  • Organize and clean work bench and shop. 

Monthly Tasks: 

  • Check all stations for any issues.
  • Perform Monthly Bike Inspections.
  • Overview of performance metrics, operational metrics with General Manager.
  • Participate in team meetings.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:  

 

  • Valid driver license and clean driving record that passes insurance requirements for the company.
  • Excellent mechanical skills, and some experience in bicycle maintenance and/or willingness to learn. 
  • Strong Communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Must be a team player with a positive attitude. 
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, manage competing demands and is able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.
  • Ability to follow instructions, respond to managements direction and solicit feedback to improve performance. 
  • Proficiency with computers and the ability to learn new software. 
  • Ability to understand and learn technical aspects of the software and the hardware capabilities and needs of a bike share system. 
  • Excitement and interest in bike sharing.
  • An eye for safety in everyday tasks. 
  • Sense of humor.

 

Physical Requirements and Special Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

  • Frequently bend, stoop, and twist throughout the day
  • Requires the ability to regularly lift objects up to 65+ lbs and carry objects of this weight for distances up to 150 feet
  • Requires the ability to perform work while standing for prolonged periods of time.  
  • Repetitive motion required of the wrists hands, or fingers occasionally throughout the work day.
  • May require working and riding a bicycle outdoors in various temperatures including rain, cold and heat conditions. 
  • Comfortable driving, stopping and working in busy outdoor urban environments. 
  • This is a part-time position expected to work 24 hours per week (4 days per week, 6 hours per day). Some hours outside of this, including nights and weekends, may be required.
