Role Overview
:

As a Highway Technician, work performed is routine but varied by circumstance. You will require specialized knowledge of highway policies, procedures, and practices. You must work under the specifications and guidelines based on established policies and procedures. You will exercise judgment and decision making when on worksite and/or leading a crew of workers. Your work performed requires a moderate amount of interpretation of technical data and industry standards to fit a variety of situations. 

 

Location:

This position is located in INDOT’s Vincennes District, Traffic Department. 

 

CDL Positions:

Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL.

 

Pay Rate:

This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $24.26 an hour. Pay for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential elements of the job duties:

  • Comply with all Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) safety policies and procedures. 
  • Operate basic highway maintenance/ traffic equipment to maintain, repair and clean highways and rights-of-way. 
  • Ensure staff are completing work assignments as directed and report problems to the supervisors. 
  • Ensure procedures comply with INDOT standards and specifications. 
  • Perform winter operations duties including snow and ice removal. 
  • Perform regular inspections and routine equipment maintenance such as: minor repairs, preventative maintenance, refueling, and pre-trip inspections. 
  • Maintain, repair, and install  pavement markings. 
  • Perform emergency response activities such as clean-up, traffic control, lane closures, placement of signs and erecting barricades.
  • Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.

What You'll Need for Success:

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE). 
  • Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment.
  • Pass and submit to a drug test as a condition of employment. 
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local highway guidelines, laws and regulations, principles, and practices for purposes of construction inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of the highway. 
  • Ability to independently lead and coordinate the work of a crew in the field. 
  • Ability to read, interpret and follow technical documents. 
  • Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather. 
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds. 
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods of time. 
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

 

 

 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.

Difficulty of Work:

Responsibility:

​You will follow established procedures and practices. You will be responsible for completion of job assignment and accuracy of records, forms, reports, and technical information disseminated. Guidance is received from the supervisor in determining work assignments. Errors in work, faulty judgment and the dissemination of technical information can cause substantial embarrassment and delays. You will be responsible for coordination of a group of employees assigned to complete a job. You may be responsible for performing tests and inspections.  

Personal Work Relationships: 

In this role, you will have contacts are with agency personnel in various divisions for the purpose of completion and coordination of job assignments. You must maintain a personal working relationship with agency personnel, contactors, the public and various INDOT departments to ensure compliance with highway policies, procedures and practices effective communications and consistent monitoring techniques. 

Physical Effort:

This role requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle and/or heavy equipment (e.g. tractors, snowplows, or factory equipment) and drive short and long distances in all weather and light conditions.
Depending on the duties performed or environment setting, frequent walking, standing, climbing stairs or ladders, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling and/or similar movements may be involved.
This role requires the ability to lift/transport items up to 50 lbs with or without the assistance of equipment.
This role requires the use limbs/fingers to easily perform manual functions. Equipment used may include the operation of complex manual and electric powered equipment or hand-tools.
This role may experience long periods of repetitive movements requiring stamina.
This role requires keen observational and hearing skills to stay alert for possible dangerous situations.

Working Conditions:

This role performs work in an environment where exposure to gas/fumes, dust, grease, noise, vibrations and/or soiling of clothing and skin surfaces may occur.
This role performs work outdoors and exposure to various outdoor weather conditions, rough terrain and wildlife may occur.
This role performs work in extreme (hot or cold) temperatures, small/tight spaces or other uncomfortable situations.
This role requires the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when necessary.
