Overview:

The Data Scientist/Tester will support test planning, design, and execution; assist with test automation and tools management; provide defect tracking and quality assurance oversight; engage in collaboration, training, and stakeholder engagement; and support risk management, analysis, and continuous improvement to ensure systems are reliable, production-ready, and compliant with USCB DCMD test coordination requirements.

Background:

The DCMD Testing Coordination Branch provides system owner and stakeholder support for data collection functional areas during development, testing, and production. The branch coordinates solution-level testing (User Acceptance Testing (UAT), integration, exception, readiness testing) and supports both Headquarters (HQ) and field operations for the Decennial Census.

Responsibilities:
  1. Perform analysis of all data into, out of, and within the DOC as needed.
  2. Identify and quantify data issues within the organization and assist in the development plans to resolve these issues.
  3. Responsible for data mapping and Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) activities as needed.
  4. Support routine data management processes and ad hoc user requests as well as perform testing activities as needed.
  5. Write, execute, and manage test cases, including validating those written by stakeholders.
  6. Support defect tracking and test case management using tools such as Jira and the X-Ray plugin.
  7. Record and document defects with detailed replication steps and supporting evidence, such as screenshots.
  8. Attend meetings to gather information needed for test planning and case development.
  9. Train stakeholders on the use of testing systems, including how to write and execute test cases and report defects.
  10. Explore and assess opportunities for implementing automated test scenarios to improve testing efficiency.
  11. Analyze and interpret data across the DOC to support testing and project needs.
  12. Identify and help resolve data-related issues within the organization.
  13. Support data management activities, including data mapping, transformation, and validation/testing.
Qualifications:

Requires two (2) years of experience in a related field.

  • Strong knowledge of software testing methodologies and risk-based testing strategies.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Federal experience with U.S. Census Bureau (USCB), Department of Commerce (DOC), or similar large-scale government testing programs.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based test automation (e.g., Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure).
  • Familiarity with accessibility testing, performance testing, and security-related test automation.
Education:

Requires a Bachelor of Science/Arts (BS/BA) degree in math, statistics, operations research, economics, or a related quantitative discipline.

Certification(s):

Requires related industry certifications.

(Remote; potential situational onsite support/meetings subject to Census approval)

 

Work Schedule: Standard Monday–Friday hours observing federal holidays, with some flexibility in start and end times to accommodate operational needs.
