Position Summary 

The Director of Marketing and Membership is a strategic leader responsible for growing the Bay Area Discovery Museum’s audience and membership while ensuring exceptional visitor experiences. Reporting to the CEO and serving on the Leadership Team, this role oversees marketing and communications (including agency partnerships), membership, graphic design, visitor services and ticketing, CRM administration, and program registration.

The Director develops and implements integrated marketing strategies to drive attendance, membership, and sales; manages brand and messaging; and ensures data-driven forecasting and reporting. They also serve as staff lead to the Board Marketing and Audience Engagement Committee. 

Key Responsibilities 

Strategic Marketing & Growth 

  • Lead integrated marketing and communications strategy to drive attendance, membership, and program sales.
  • Oversee brand identity, messaging, and external communications.
  • Manage agency partnerships and ensure creative excellence with measurable results.

Visitor Services & Customer Experience 

  • Direct ticketing, admissions, membership services, CRM systems, and program registration.
  • Ensure a high-quality, inclusive, and welcoming visitor experience onsite and online.

Data, Metrics & Reporting 

  • Maintain and analyze visitor, membership, and sales data.
  • Provide regular reports and forecasts for the CEO, Leadership Team, and Board.
  • Use competitive and audience research to inform strategies and drive growth.

Leadership & Collaboration 

  • Supervise and develop staff across marketing, design, membership, and visitor services.
  • Serve as staff lead to the Board Marketing and Audience Engagement Committee.
  • Collaborate across departments to align campaigns and customer experience with institutional goals.

Ideal Candidate 

  • At least 5 years of senior-level experience in marketing, communications, or visitor services, ideally in a nonprofit or cultural institution.
  • Proven track record of driving audience growth, membership expansion, and earned revenue.
  • Strong data analysis and reporting skills for forecasting and decision-making.
  • Experienced people leader who coaches and inspires teams.
  • Excellent communicator with strong collaboration and relationship-building skills.
