Position Duties

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary responsibility is to oversee the development, implementation, and monitoring of Accounts Payable activity for the agency. Analyze financial information and programs, make recommendations to management, and prepare a range of financial reports, including specialized or non-standard reports. 

Supervise and plan work of Accounts Payable staff, implement training for supervised staff while ensuring all accounting policies are being followed in accordance with GAAP, federal and state guidelines.

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the candidate must be able to:
 

  • Ensure the proper and timely recording of transactions in the accounting subsystems. 
  • Maintain extensive knowledge of all subsystems used to promote the work carried out in the department and attend workshops or meetings to facilitate this.
  • Coordinates with the Accounting Director and Department of Audits and Accounts in reconciling the agency’s financial statements for preparation of Annual Comprehensive Financial Report at year end.
  • Survey operations to ascertain accounting needs and to recommend, develop, and maintain solutions to business and financial problems. 
  • Use Excel and other Microsoft programs to produce ad hoc and standard reports.
  • Provide support to all GBI staff, while developing a knowledge base of functions and internal policies



This is the mid to senior level of the accounting job series. Incumbents at this level may require additional training or experience to gain full proficiency in all or some of the job responsibilities. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on-site and telework.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Query, analyze, and present information extracted from financial systems
  • Read, interpret and reconcile financial reports
  • Proactively identify innovative solutions to problems as they arise
  • Plan, monitor and distribute work assignments
  • Use Excel to perform financial duties
  • Present in the office as scheduled
  • Sporadic overnight travel 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The incumbent will occasionally be required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop and kneel. Occasionally light lifting/or moving boxes or supplies may be required. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position requires the incumbent to work in an office setting which includes shared office space with other professionals.


NOTE: This position may require some travel and operating a state vehicle. A valid Georgia driver’s license is required.


Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Accountant 4 (FIP023; Pay Grade L)

Bachelor’s degree in accounting and three (3) years of professional accounting job-related experience; or two (2) years of experience at the lower-level Accountant 3 (FIP022) or position equivalent.


Accountant Supervisor (FIP024; Pay Grade L)

Bachelor’s degree in accounting and four (4) years of professional accounting job-related experience, which includes one (1) year in a lead worker, team leader, or supervisory role; or two (2) years of experience at the lower level Accountant 4 (FIP023) or position equivalent.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
 
 Preference will be given to applicants that, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess two or more of the following:
 

  • Master’s degree in Accounting or Certified Accountant or equivalent
  • Experience processing accounts payable transactions
  • Experience using TeamWorks Financials or WorkDay 
  • At least two years of supervisory experience 
  • A current GBI employee
