This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement with IATSE United Scenic Artists Local USA 829.
Position Summary
The Scenic Artist shall possess all basic scenic art skills and in addition, is responsible for painting hard and soft scenery, props, textures, carvings, and any other covered scenic work to execute the designer’s vision. This includes a broad range of artwork on all types of hard, soft, or sculptural theatrical scenery and properties, such as texturing, painting, dyeing, sculpting, and applying various graphics, papers, vinyl, and other decorative materials by any means.
The Scenic Artist maintains a high standard of technical skill and craftsmanship in all work. They demonstrate intermediate proficiency in color matching and mixing without recipes, drop preparation techniques like starching and stapling, simple equipment repair, advanced mixing techniques, and assembling touch-up kits for ongoing maintenance. Additionally, Scenic Artists may set up or supervise the setup and placement of scaffolding and bridges used for painting scenery, as well as manage the tacking down, folding, and general handling of drops and other soft goods. They should also be able to do basic maintenance on paint tools & other equipment.

The typical schedule is Monday - Friday days, 8:30AM-5PM. Must occasionally be willing and able to work flexible hours/days, including evenings and weekends, reflective of the dynamic schedule of the theater. There is a guaranteed minimum of 36 hours per week, with a guaranteed minimum of 44 weeks per fiscal (September 1 - August 31) year.

Requirements
· Relevant demonstrated artistic skill and experience to meet the visual needs of the show within time and financial requirements.
· Demonstrated collaborative skills.
· Skill in interpreting drawings to reproduce designs accurately.
· Intermediate knowledge of scenic painting tools, techniques, and vocabulary.
· Knowledge of a wide variety of materials to offer greater flexibility in executing designs, including, but not limited to: hard scenery, soft scenery, texture and carving.
· Can communicate effectively and work flexibly to respond to design changes and shifting priorities.
· Can problem-solve creatively.
· Understanding of proper chemical safety and storage.
· Strong commitment to safety in the workplace.
· Can lift between 25 - 50 lbs. continuously throughout an assigned shift, with or without assistance.
· Can work at height on occasion using ladders, lifts, scaffolding, etc.
· Must be willing and able to work flexible hours/days, including evenings and weekends, reflective of the dynamic schedule of the theater.
