Lead our shelter operations during evenings, weekends, and holidays! Provide supervision, maintain security, and respond to crises while ensuring a safe and supportive environment. Evening shifts are Monday–Friday.

Leadership
• Train, coach and supervise a high performing Shelter Support Team.
• Provide thorough training and orientation for new and current team members.
• Maintain open communication with team members, including regular one-on-one meetings.
• Oversee collection of participant data, record keeping, outcome tracking, and timely reporting.
• Work closely with Shelter Manager to ensure consistency and alignment with organizational standards of care.
• Support professional development of Shelter Support Specialists by identifying training needs and providing constructive feedback.

Safety and Security

• Ensure security of Emergency Shelter by appropriately responding to phone, door buzzers, locks, security systems, fire alarm systems and security checklists.
• Deliver services with safety, respect, and effectiveness.
• Monitor shelter spaces regularly to identify and address safety risks, including conducting routine walkthroughs of common areas, and entrances, and exits.
• Support implementation of fire drills, evacuation procedures, and other emergency preparedness activities.
• Document and report safety-related incidents, facility concerns, or safety issues promptly according to YWCA policies.
• Ensure staff follow established safety and emergency protocols consistently.

Operations

• Develop and manage monthly staff schedules to ensure 24-hour coverage.
• Ensure participants are complying with program guidelines and procedures.
• Provide participants with essential items such as food, clothing, and other resources.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of shelter, including maintaining adequate cleaning supplies and paper products.

Crisis Response

• Provide immediate and professional response to any emergency or crises at the Emergency Shelter.
• Ensure Shelter team intakes and orients women and children to YWCA Shelter following organizational guidelines.
• Coordinate with YWCA leadership or external emergency responders as needed to manage crises effectively.
• Assist in de-escalating conflicts in a trauma-informed, culturally responsive manner.

Communication

• Perform general administrative functions such as participant logging, answering the phone, and responding to in-person inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to support participant needs.
• Act as a liaison between shelter staff members by ensuring critical incidents are addressed appropriately and information is clearly communicated across the team.
• Communicate with participants in a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and respectful manner, upholding confidentiality at all times.
• Share updates, concerns, and observation with team members promptly to support effective decision-making and participant care.

Other Job Duties

• Assist in shift coverage as necessary.
• Participate in OnCall rotation.
• Prompt and reliable attendance is required.
• Provide current certification in CPR and First Aid.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Female. (BFOQ)
• Bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences (i.e. social work, CDFS, sociology, criminal justice, human services, etc) field or equivalent education/experience is required.
• Understanding unique challenges for those experiencing domestic violence, homelessness, human trafficking, mental illness, and chemical dependence and child development issues is essential.
• Experience supervising staff or volunteers in a shelter, residential, or human services setting preferred.
• Ability to manage high volume of work.
• Must have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
• Meet all background check requirements.
• An understanding of, appreciation for, and support of the mission of the YWCA Cass Clay, which is eliminating racism and empowering women.

Requirements:

These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this position. While performing the responsibilities for this position, the employee is required to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs, bend, push, carry and drive frequently. The employee will also be required to twist at waist, squat, kneel, stoop, crouch and reach overhead occasionally. Standing in place and sitting at desk for prolonged periods of time are performed occasionally. Repetitive keying, data entry, wrist motion, and reaching above shoulders are performed frequently. Lifting up to 20 lbs. from shoulder to overhead is occasional, carrying and pulling up to 75 lbs. is performed frequently and pushing up to 40 lbs. is performed frequently.
