About the Department
The Power Plant Manager is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and oversight of the community college’s power plant and associated systems, ensuring a safe, reliable, and energy-efficient environment. The Power Plant Manager assists the Director of Facilities & Engineering in the operation of the power plant and equipment within acceptable environmental compliance limits. Ensures that the college meets the safety standards as determined by the Department of Higher Education, Department of Capital Asset Maintenance and Management (DCAMM) and other State entities.
Position Duties
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Plant Operations:
- Operate and monitor boilers, generators, and other power plant equipment.
- Maintain optimal efficiency and safety of the power plant systems.
- These systems include high pressure steam, condensate and associated systems as assigned
- Conduct regular inspections and document operational data.
- Ensure the generator is properly functioning.
- Maintenance and Repairs:
- Responsible for ordering fuel oil, chemicals and supplies for plant and mechanical room systems.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic equipment as needed.
- Coordinate with vendors and contractors for specialized repairs or upgrades.
- Compliance and Safety:
- Adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations, including the Department of Labor.
- Schedules and oversees the annual and semi-annual inspections for pressure vessels and additional state and federal requirements. This includes scheduling inspections and working with state agencies.
- Maintain proper records for inspections, certifications, and repairs.
- Ensure compliance with environmental and emissions standards.
- Emergency Response:
- Respond promptly to equipment failures
- Participate in drills and maintain readiness for emergency situations.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of daily operations, maintenance activities, and system performance.
- Provide regular reports to supervisors and recommend improvements or upgrades.
- Supervising:
- Manages the Utility Plant Operators roles.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Three to five years’ experience in steam plant engineering field with a minimum of three years’ experience as an operating engineer.
- Possession of a current Massachusetts Second Class or higher Stationary Engineers license.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience with proven ability to lead and support staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
- Experience with energy management systems and supervision of a three-shift power plant operation.

Other Qualifications
Full-Time, Benefitted Non-Unit Position:
Compensation: Grade 7, $86,438.76 – $95,435.88/year.
Working Conditions:
- The position is primarily located within the campus power plant, with occasional work in other facilities across the college.
- This role requires on-call availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
