Performs animal care and research responsibilities related to MBL’s Cephalopod Program. This includes the general husbandry of multiple cephalopod cultures along with associated research applications. This position will work toward continual refinement of cephalopod culture and husbandry techniques, design and construct systems, serve as an experienced resource for interns and volunteer, assist with relevant research pertaining to the breeding program, and occasionally conduct tours and outreach events for the scientific and local community.

• Construct and maintain open and closed cephalopod systems.
• Assist with research priorities of breeding initiative.
• Assist to maintain multiple cephalopod cultures and develop new culture techniques.
• Train and supervise co-op interns and volunteers during day-to-day operations.
• Assist with all aspects of cephalopod husbandry including animal feeds, system rounds, egg harvesting, and general maintenance.
• Life food collection and culture.
• Data recording and analysis; quantification of novel research.
• Assist with transport, accession, and deaccession of animals.
• Perform necropsies.
• Implementing water quality monitoring devices; 24/7 system monitoring of systems, water quality, and life support equipment via mobile alerts.
• Monitor and observe animals for signs of disease and/or stress.
• Developing new innovative designs to improve cephalopod culture and hatchling survivorship.
• Research, optimize, and standardize bobtail squid (Euprymna spp.) culture methods for the global research community.
• As needed, interact with media, donors, schools and the general public on MBL’s behalf.
• Assist Manager of Cephalopod Operations in the development of cephalopod workshops.
• Nurture working relationships with other labs, institutions and aquariums.
• Assist with population management of lab animals by determining working broodstock pairs, manipulating genetics, and arranging ideal quantities for each life stage.
• Assist with the interview and hiring process for interns
• Lead tours of the facility for visiting researchers and donors
• Advise visiting researchers on care and culture of cephalopods.
• As needed, lead CRISPR meetings with associated staff and researchers to apprise everyone of updates to the cephalopod transgenic lines.
• Assist with creation of invoices and quotes for animal deaccessions.
• Swab squid to determine genotype of transgenic squid and train staff and researchers on the proper techniques.
• Restock daily use supplies in mariculture and make POs/reorder
• Be on-call and respond to after-hours power outages or system malfunctions.
• Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience in animal care and research required or Master’s degree and at least 1-2 years of experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk, hear, and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs 100 feet. Specific visual abilities include close vision, distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Employee must have ability to travel by car/boat and air as needed, conduct field work in the collection of prey and research of animals and maintain daily contact with a living collection of animals
