About the Position
Reporting to the Senior Director, the Director of People Experience leads the design, execution, and continuous improvement of StriveTogether’s core talent practices, ensuring they align with our broader people strategy and culture goals. This role owns key talent lifecycle processes—including talent acquisition, promotion and upward mobility, performance management, and learning and development policies and processes. Through their work, the role will maximize staff impact, engagement, and retention. Additionally, the Director, People Experience will serve as a strategic people partner or “business partner” to managers in the organization and a frontline point-of-contact for all staff on talent-related matters.
The Director, People Experience will be a trusted key collaborator and go-to-person for the Senior Director, People Experience who holds all accountabilities related to people work, including developing and driving people strategy. This role will work closely with the Senior Director to align on priorities and strategy. Therefore, the role requires a high degree of independence, an ability to contribute meaningfully through both strategy and execution, and a strong desire to build relationships and network with all staff across the organization so that they can use qualitative and quantitative data to inform the talent strategy and achieve their targets.
The ideal candidate combines a strategic mindset with operational know-how and brings a strong equity lens to HR and organizational development. This role also contributes to employee engagement efforts and uses data to drive improvements in employee experience and organizational effectiveness
Responsibilities and Duties
Talent Strategy (45%)
- Develop an overarching strategy for talent management including defining key metrics and performance targets, prioritizing change and improvement projects, and collaborating with organizational leadership to ensure alignment with strategic plan.
- Leads the process development, communications and implementation of revised annual performance management processes, including goal setting, performance reviews, and development plan components. Seek feedback and input and then use that data to analyze routinely to iterate and improve. The Senior Director will provide guidance and input on the key initiatives led by this role.
- Oversee and set approach for the learning and development budget and resource distribution, and support managers to implement effectively and equitably. Identify common employee training and development needs and create relevant experiences or identify relevant external partners.
- Create an approach to career pathing, promotion polices, and upward mobility, and work with managers to develop career progressions plans for staff. Coach managers when needed to support staff career development.
- Develop and maintain toolkits, templates, and guides to support consistent, equitable, and effective people practices.
- Lead and implement StriveTogether's talent acquisition approach and recruitment efforts, including ensuring high-quality, diverse pools of talent, managing to standards and timing throughout the process, and selecting service provider partners when relevant.
- Communicate updates and expectations for talent processes and related matters regularly and in an employee-centered manner. When changes occur, expertly manage communicating changes with employees and leadership.
- Partner with the Senior Director and consultants as needed to translate strategic priorities into scalable, inclusive talent systems.
- Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Senior Director.
Manager and Staff Support (20%)
- Act as a business partner to junior- and mid-level managers, offering coaching and support on hiring, feedback, development, and team dynamics.
- Serve as a frontline point of contact for staff questions or needs related to performance, development, and other talent topics.
- Provide just-in-time training and capacity building for managers on people leadership and HR best practices.
- Ensure compliance with labor laws, regulations, and company policies.
Employee Engagement and Feedback (20%)
- Facilitate ongoing employee feedback efforts, including stay interviews, exit interviews, and bi-annual or quarterly staff surveys.
- Lead or co-lead employee engagement initiatives, such as culture committee, mentorship programs, or peer learning spaces.
- Serve as a resource and support for affinity groups.
- Help foster a culture of recognition, trust, and open communication.
Data and Insights (15%)
- Oversee the implementation and management of talent technology solutions that improve organizational efficiency, employee experience, and/or data accuracy.
- Develop dashboards or regular updates on hiring, retention, engagement, and performance management outcomes.
- Utilize quantitative and qualitative data to provide insights and recommendations for improvements as part of strategic support decision-making.
- Ensure the integrity and confidentiality of talent data and records.
Organizational Responsibilities (5%)
- Adhere to company policies and procedures.
- Participate in staff meetings, organizational trainings, cross-functional teams and interview processes.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in human resources, organizational development, talent management, or related areas.
- Proven track record in designing and implementing inclusive, equity-centered people practices.
- Strong knowledge of HR/talent topics such as recruitment, performance, learning, and employee engagement.
- Experience coaching managers and building capacity around people leadership.
- Excellent facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong project management skills with attention to detail and follow-through.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and use data to inform decisions.
- Motivated by StriveTogether’s mission and values.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
- Familiarity with HR technologies (e.g., ADP, performance management platforms, survey tools).
Location and Work Requirements
This role can be remote, or hybrid (3 days in office) based out of StriveTogether’s downtown Cincinnati headquarters. We will consider remote applicants from most U.S. locations; however, we’re currently unable to support employment in Hawaii, Alaska, Montana, or Puerto Rico due to operational limitations.
StriveTogether prioritizes candidates from locations proximate to StriveTogether partner locations.
This role will require up to 20% travel for non-Cincinnati staff with slightly less for staff based out of headquarters. Candidates should have the ability to effectively use remote work technology, including Slack, Zoom and other technology.
