SUMMARYWorking with students with learning and developmental/mobility disabilities or literacy/math difficulties and under immediate supervision. Administer specific instructional and behavioral strategies and techniques; attend student progress meetings; develop and maintain treatment schedules; perform a variety of clerical and supportive tasks for certified instructional personnel; learn and apply individual instructional procedures; oversee students with special needs and perform related work assigned. Provide one-to-one instruction.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The essential functions or duties listed below are illustrations of the type of work that is performed and is not an exhaustive list of the duties performed for by this position. Other duties may be assigned.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCESS / RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Provide physical assistant to student as needed. 

    • Work with the SPED Liaison and Teachers to implement IEP (Individualized Education Program) accommodations.
    • Support students on IEPs to facilitate success in the educational setting.
    • Assist students in completing classroom assignments and participation in classroom activities. 
    • Assure student understanding of classroom rules and procedures and assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.
    • Provide positive specific feedback to students.
    • Facilitate small group and/or one-to-one instruction.
    • Collect Data in support of IEP goals, objectives, and/or behavior plans.

    BUILDING RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Arrive at school promptly at assigned time.
    • May be assigned bus duty, lunch duty, recess duty, hall duty, and/or other duties to monitor and assist students with transition.
    • Maintain a professional attitude at all times.
    • Demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with students, staff, and the school community.
    • Effectively communicate with students and other staff orally and in writing.
    • May be required to assist with other duties as requested by the Principal.

    PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Ability to follow written and/or oral directions of the SPED Liaison, Teacher, IEP, and/or principal.
    • Understand and uphold confidentiality requirements regarding student academic, special education, and medical records.
    • Understand responsibilities as a Mandated Reporter under state law.
    • Understand and implement emergency preparedness procedures when circumstances require.
    • Perform duties with awareness of District and Hudson Board of Education policies.
    • Attend Professional Development programs as offered by the district.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful completion of Criminal Records Check (CORI), and fingerprints

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Have obtained an associate (or higher) degree, or
  • Have at least two years of post-secondary education that is equivalent to at least 48 credit hours from an accredited higher education institution,
  • High School Diploma/GED and have met a rigorous standard on one of the formal Massachusetts-endorsed Assessments: Parapro or WorkKeys. Contact HR for more information.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the Superintendent of Schools based on the HPA/HSC Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • 10 Months, 183 work days
  • 3 personal days, 12 sick days. proratued pursuant to date of hire
  • This is a salaried position distributed over 26 paychecks including a lump sum in June to cover summer pay

  • $500.00 sign on bonus - paid out following 40 calendar days of work
  • Referral Bonus of $500.00 eligible if recommending a new employee and they are employed in excess of three months

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Hudson Public Schools will make every effort to accommodate disability requirements as per ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990).
  • Para educators may have duties which require the ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, bend or twist at the neck or trunk. 
  • Para educators will need to use an IPAD, ChromeBook, or similar device.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Public school environment with an acceptable noise level.
  • May be required occasionally to meet multiple demands from several sources.
  • Majority of the work is indoors. Maybe required to spend time outdoors supervising students during recess, emergency procedures, and special activities.

While performing duties of this job, the employee may often remain in a stationary position for considerable periods of time. The employee will have also have ample periods of standing and may be required to traverse throughout the building. The employee must frequently use hands and frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery (i.e., calculator, copy machine, and computer printer). Physical abilities may also include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, and near/far visual acuity/depth perception/color vision/field. Ability must be able to lift and/or push and pull 15 to 20lbs for short periods, and walk up and down stairs several times a day. The employee must be able to communicate effectively with students, staff members, and the public in person and on the telephone.
