Overview
The Outreach Services department at The New York Public Library (NYPL) aims to increase awareness of NYPL and its offerings across the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island, with special focus placed on reaching vulnerable populations.  Reporting to the Manager of Outreach Services, the Coordinator, Outreach Services supports development and implementation of innovative outreach and programming for adults across NYPL branches targeting hard to reach communities.

The team supports NYPL’s mission to engage with  diverse audiences with a focus on supporting older adults, low-income communities, immigrants and asylum seekers, people experiencing homelessness, and people with disabilities. The department also supports NYPL’s goal of connecting with readers citywide to foster a love of reading.

We are looking for someone we can count on to:

Own:
  • Responding to and attending community outreach requests from the public and internal departments, including providing support to the Bookmobiles as necessary
  • Internal communication with branches and other central teams
  • Administrative support to the Outreach Services & Engagement team, including but not limited to: coordinating schedules and meetings, tracking metrics and compiling reports, supporting program production, promotion, and facilitation, and more
Teach:
  • Outreach best practices, including tools and tactics as well as metric tracking, to branch staff
  • Initiative or project specific guidelines 
Learn:
  • Partnership management with both city-agencies and local community based organizations 
  • Large-scale initiative planning and execution
Improve:
  • Internal tracking and data organization, including partnership contacts and inventory management
  • Strategic alignment across team’s projects 
Some expectations for this role are that within:

1 month, this person will:
  • Understand the reach, scope, and workflows of the New York Public Library, including branches, internal departments, policies, and more
  • Be knowledgeable about Reading and Engagement goals and objectives, and how they support NYPL’s organizational goals
  • Familiarize themselves with current NYPL Outreach Guidelines and relevant documents
  • Incorporate DEIA principles into all work
3 months, this person will:
  • Maintain outreach request organization, including responding to community organizations and connecting them to the relevant department or branch
  • Conduct regular outreach with existing and new partners, as well as supporting the Bookmobiles whenever necessary
  • Use core internal tools and applications such as Drupal, Lair, and Workday
6 months and beyond, this person will:
  • Establish strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Assist with the development and implementation of core outreach initiatives  
  • Collect and assess program data for impact measurement; report metrics to the Manager, Outreach Services and  Associate Director, Outreach Services & Engagement,to inform strategic planning
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Manager, Outreach Services, the Coordinator, Outreach Services will:
  • Maintain up-to-date information, guidelines, and other resources for branch staff on Lair and other online platforms. Coordinate scheduling, assist in creating and conducting training and curricula for branch staff related to outreach. 
  • Coordinate data management, tracking metrics, and assist in regularly monitoring outreach initiatives, programs and services.
  • Coordinate community outreach requests from NYPL library locations and external partners. Attend scheduled outreach events, including planning and setting-up equipment.  Support production, promotion, and facilitation of specific programs as required.
  • Provide clear information about NYPL services and programs to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Assist in the overall planning and development of key initiatives, services, and programs.
  • Help identify opportunities for outreach, programs and collaborations based on research into current trends and innovations, staff training needs, and compatibility with NYPL’s strategic objectives.
  • Help to develop, maintain and coordinate community partnerships that align with the Library’s DEIA mission, that encourage sustainable and innovative collaborations while contributing to outreach priorities helping to connect target communities with NYPL services.
  • Support Bookmobile service on special occasions as needed. 
  • Perform related duties and work on special projects as required.

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
Required Experience
  • At least 1 year of  community outreach, engagement or administrative experience in a large library or non-profit setting
Required Skills 
  • Fluent in English and Chinese, French or Spanish
  • Highly collaborative, creative, flexible, and organized person who is dedicated to community engagement principles
  • High level of initiative in effective community outreach and public programs development and delivery
  • Strong project development and coordination abilities
  • Excellent research skills and a strong sense of organization
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate, communicate ideas, generate support, negotiate and resolve conflict
  • Basic understanding of graphic design 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to produce quality documents, reports and communications in a variety of formats for both internal and external audiences
