Job Summary: The Transplant Patient Assistant works under the supervision of the Kidney, Pancreas, and Transplant physicians and physician extenders in the Transplantation Institute, and reports to the Director.  Cares for patients within the scope of practice for a medical assistant including obtaining new patient demographic, financial, medical information, scheduling initial appointments, preparing patients for examination, obtaining authorizations for tests, procedures, assisting with admissions into the hospital.  Triages calls and concerns from patients and health care professionals, participates in the department Performance Improvement program.  Directs flow of patients in the evaluation clinic.  Obtains medical records for clinic chart and enters data in the transplant database.  Utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize excellence in customer service, safe patient care, and professionalism.  Contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population.  These services may be provided for both the LLUMC and LLUCH hospitals.  Performs other duties as needed. 

Education and Experience: Completion of a Certified Medical Assistant or Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program required (In progress with quarterly reports is acceptable).  Medical Assistant or LVN training required.  Minimum one year of previous clinical experience preferred.   

Knowledge and Skills: Able to write legibly, speak in English with professional quality; use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position; operate patient care equipment necessary to the position.  Able to communicate in both English and Spanish preferred; relate positively, effectively and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following policies, work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; collaborate with health care team and follow directions.  Able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; follow directions; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; work well under pressure; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; function within scope of practice.   Able to perform basic patient care activities using proper body mechanics and safety precautions. 

Licensures and Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association required.
