Toyota Connected is seeking a Managing Engineer to join our Labs team. On this team, you will solve complex problems and work alongside talented Engineers that use cutting-edge technologies, Machine Learning, and NLP to transform the vehicle customer experience. We love people who think big and like to get their hands dirty to help us build exciting initiatives.
*This is 50% hands on Software Engineering position. Recent active coding experience is important for this position.
Responsibilities:
- Drive engineering and product strategy, vision, and roadmaps working closely with product owners and customers
- Regularly dive into architecture, code, deployments, and operations to model technical excellence for the team
- Define and implement best practices and standards for software engineering
- Review operational procedures to ensure compliance with policies and performance measures
- Facilitate discussions and documentation for team system design, security, engineering, and architecture
- Coach through advanced troubleshooting, debugging, and upgrading to systems, plus perform these duties as needed
- Define and measure engineering velocity and feature tradeoffs
- Apply global and local regulatory requirements for security and privacy in software engineering
- Lead and empower high-performing engineering team(s), consisting of entry to senior level Engineers (JL11-JL15)
- Facilitate team growth by attracting candidates, interviewing, evaluating, and selecting new talent
- Support a smooth onboarding process by providing resources, guidance, and integration support, cross collaborating with others to help ensure an excellent new hire experience
- Establish clear role expectations and performance goals, plus ensure alignment on desired outcomes
- Offer timely and quality feedback and coaching for skill improvement and development and to address performance issues, including performance reviews and in the moment, conversations characterized by high-quality, actionable feedback
- • Provide guidance, direction, and development opportunities to foster professional growth and promotion
- Coordinate work by assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and making necessary adjustments, as needed
- Help bridge gaps between Toyota Connected, Toyota Motor North America, and 3rd party suppliers
Required Qualifications:
- 6+ years of software engineering experience or total equivalent experience
- Experience managing engineering teams with positive results
- Experience writing clean, concise, tested, maintainable code in Rust, Go, C, C++, C#, or Java (Must be willing to learn and code in Rust and Go)
- Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization and ability to articulate complex ideas without complexity
- Grasp of both business operational and technical/engineering concepts backed by problem-solving skills to help drive technical decisions
- Strong experience in leading and managing microservices based, event-driven architecture with high reliability and scalability to deliver mission-critical solutions
- Experience in Agile practices and promoting Agile development techniques such as TDD, BDD, etc.
- Experience with public cloud including AWS, Azure, or GCP
- Experience helping to resolve complex technical challenges with multi team impact
- Experience participating in interviewing and selecting new hires
- Experience guiding teams make cost effective technology decisions
- Experience in software product delivery and operations for large scale customer facing and mission critical products or solutions
- Strong decision-making skills, with experience evaluating risks, analyzing options, and implementing effective solutions
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze challenges, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions
- Proven experience in building and leading high-performing teams, including recruiting, mentoring, and managing team dynamics to achieve organizational goals
- Ability to build and maintain trust through transparent communication, integrity, and strong relationship management with teams and stakeholders
- Experience in coaching, mentoring, and developing others, fostering growth, skill enhancement, and career progression within a team
- Proven experience in risk management, including identifying potential risks, assessing impact, and implementing strategies to mitigate them effectively
- Strong influencing skills, with the ability to gain buy-in, drive alignment, and inspire action across teams and stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across teams and departments, fostering strong relationships to achieve shared goals
- Ability to foster engagement, creating an inclusive and motivating environment that drives team commitment and performance
- Strong conflict resolution skills, with experience mediating disputes, fostering open communication, and achieving positive outcomes
- Experience in establishing a clear vision, setting strategic direction, and aligning teams to achieve long-term organizational goals
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
