Boulder County Housing Department is seeking to hire a Grounds/Custodian. The Grounds/Custodian is responsible for maintaining safe, functional, and visually appealing housing authority properties. Duties span facility maintenance, groundskeeping and landscaping, snow removal, and janitorial services, ensuring compliance with all safety and housing standards.

This is an hourly, non-benefited position that will work approximately 30 hours per week Monday - Friday 7:30am - 12:30pm with on-call availability for emergency snow removal. This position will work out of 1535 Emery St, Longmont, Colorado. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is non-exempt. 

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.

Hiring Salary Range: $24.72 - $35.00 Hourly 

Tentative Hiring Timeline:

  • Phone Screening: Week of September 22nd
  • First Round Interviews: Week of September 29th
  • Reference Check: Week of September 29th

Position Duties

1. General Maintenance

  1. Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and necessary repairs for buildings, systems, and equipment
  2. Troubleshoot and repair basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC issues
  3. Assist with unit turnovers, including cleaning, painting, patching, and fixture replacement
  4. Maintain a clean and organized workshop and storage areas
2. Landscaping & Groundskeeping
  1. Mow lawns, trim shrubs, prune trees, and edge sidewalks
  2. Weed, mulch, fertilize, and maintain flower beds and green spaces
  3. Operate and maintain landscaping equipment safely
  4. Apply pesticides and herbicides in compliance with safety regulations
3. Snow & Ice Removal
  1. Clear snow and ice from sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, and building entrances
  2. Apply de-icing materials to ensure safe pedestrian and vehicle access
  3. Operate snow blowers, plows, and related equipment during winter conditions
  4. Respond to snow/ice events promptly, including early mornings or after-hours when necessary
4. Janitorial Services
  1. Clean and sanitize common areas, including lobbies, hallways, laundry rooms, and restrooms
  2. Sweep, mop, vacuum, and polish floors
  3. Empty trash and recycling containers, replacing liners as needed
  4. Restock janitorial supplies and report inventory needs
5. Administrative & Communication Duties
  1. Document and report all maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs
  2. Respond to resident maintenance requests professionally and in a timely manner
  3. Collaborate effectively with other staff, vendors, and contractors
  4. Participate in team meetings, trainings, and safety briefings

6. Additional Responsibilities
  1. Performs related work, as required
  2. May be reassigned during emergency situations

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent and 1 (one) year of experience in building maintenance, landscaping, or related fields.

DRIVER'S LICENSE & RELIABLE VEHICLE:

Other Qualifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Technical or trade certification
  • Two or more years of experience in building maintenance, landscaping, or related fields
  • Working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and groundskeeping practices

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to operate snow removal, landscaping, and janitorial equipment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Capability to lift 50 lbs and work in varying weather conditions
  • Exposure to noise, dust, hazardous materials, and outdoor elements is expected
