JOB SUMMARY: The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is seeking an organized and detailed orientated Community Support Manager who will be responsible for overseeing the AWLA’s pet-retention and managed admission programs, with the goal of keeping families together wherever possible. In addition the Manager will assist the Director of Community Programs in all aspects of the AWLA’s community support programming including (but not limited to) sourcing and applying for applicable grant funding, managing successfully funded projects, pet pantry pickups, monthly vaccination clinic, coordinating crisis care, and our in-community pet and people wellness events.
Schedule: Tuesday thru Saturday. Evening and weekend work required.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
This position is supervised by: Director of Community Programs

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB INCLUDE:
Animal Admissions
Maintain the protocol by which animals will be surrendered to the AWLA, updating based on research and data as needed:
- Analyze available intake data to ascertain in what areas the AWLA needs to increase offerings to allow families to retain their pets
- Reach out to all rehome and return requests and offer resources if possible
- Schedule and manage all appropriate surrenders in an organized and timely fashion:
- Send medical records to intake staff ahead of time
- If euthanasia is the humane outcome due to medical or behavioral concerns, ensure communication with animal guardian is maintained
- If euthanasia is requested by guardian, ensure appropriate staff are informed
- Create a policy for ‘Surrender to Foster’ by which animals are surrendered to the AWLA but can remain with their families until adoption
- Review and update resources by which families can rehome their animals independently without surrendering
- Research other organizations that may be able to assist such as ‘Dogs on Deployment’ and ensure the AWLA is maintaining an accurate list of resources
- Ensure anyone who reaches out for assistance is treated in a courteous and professional manner
Post-Adoption Behavioral Support
- Assist the Behavior and Training Manager with post-adoption behavioral support
- Research and create program by which community members can access low cost behavior training
- Market the AWLA’s post-adoption training classes
- Provide information on the AWLA’s low cost behavior training program to families experiencing behavioral challenges with their pets, and connect them to the behavior team as appropriate for additional support
Crisis Care
- Manage incoming Crisis Care requests
- Ascertain vaccination and spay or neuter status prior to intake
- Ensure accuracy of contact details for animal’s guardian
- Maintain regular contact with the guardian and schedule pickup within the designated window
- Communicate with foster team if foster placement is appropriate
- If animal is at the facility, ensure adequate enrichment is provided including outside time
Community Programs
- Grant research and applications
- Assist the Development Staff and the CEO with researching and applying for appropriate grants
- Manage or assist with implementation of programs for which grant funding is secured
- Assist with grant reporting as appropriate
- Community Wellness Events and Vaccine Clinics
- Assist with the planning and on site coordination of Community Wellness Events
- Assist with monthly vaccine clinics
- Pet Pantry
- Prepare Pet Pantry pickups as needed
- Correspond with pet pantry recipients as needed
- Staff Development
- Regularly update colleagues with latest research
- Mentor less experienced colleagues
Other duties/functions as assigned
- Regular Manager on Duty assignment
- Participate in managers, departmental and all-staff meetings to share ideas and suggestions for improving animal care and the quality of the organization as a whole
- Other duties as assigned by Community Programs Director
Requirements
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent
- Proven ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy workplace environment in an organized and timely fashion
- Minimum of 3 years working in an animal shelter, preferably an open-admission facility
- A strong understanding and belief in the Open Adoptions principles
- A strong understanding of the goals of Intake Diversion programs
- Ability to accurately perform basic mathematical calculations
- Understanding of humane care and treatment of animals
- Valid Driver’s License
Preferred:
- Experience in animal care
- Additional coursework or training in management
- Fluent in written and spoken Spanish
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Indoors in a high noise air-conditioned/heated building; outdoors at shelter, or at various locations
- Equipment use: Includes use of PC, laser printer, copy machine, fax machine, telephone, scanner
- Work hours: Work hours will vary, with evening, weekend, and holiday hours required on a regular basis
MENTAL, PHYSICAL AND COMMUNICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Regular exposure to animals, cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal feces, bites and scratches
- Regularly required to be able to communicate with staff, volunteers, and the public, both in writing and verbally
- Ability to maintain accurate data and records
- Requires working alone with minimal supervision
- Requires patience and tact when working with difficult or emotional people
- Conflict mediation and ability to resolve complaints from customers in a calm and friendly manner
- Requires treating people and animals in a courteous and respectful manner at all times
