Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is the state’s largest hunger relief organization and one of the leading food banks in the Feeding America Network. In additional to vital hunger relief programs in our 21-county service area, we also operate Fresh Connect Central, a regional produce cooperative for Feeding America, serve as a contract reclamation site for Kroger Central Division, and are a staging site for FEMA disaster response.

Position Purpose of The Security ManagerThe Security Manager is responsible for the safety and security of Gleaners Food Bank’s employees, guests, facilities, and assets. This role oversees security operations on Gleaners property, manages contracted security staff, and maintains physical security systems and protocols. Key duties include monitoring the premises, coordinating pantry traffic and distribution, working security desk shifts, and responding to incidents with professionalism and care. The Security Manager plays a critical role in supporting staff, resolving conflicts, and upholding a safe, welcoming environment—advancing Gleaners’ mission to be a leader the fight against hunger.

Essential Functions of The Security Manager:

Site Security & Threat Awareness

  • Maintain situational awareness of potential natural and human-made threats, particularly during distribution and high-traffic periods.
  • Conduct frequent security patrols inside and outside the facility, identifying and addressing suspicious behavior or safety hazards proactively.
  • Provide real-time assessments of emerging threats and intervention as needed to protect individuals and assets.
  • Monitor and control access to restricted areas, ensure individuals are properly credentialed, and monitor premises for any unauthorized individuals.

Traffic Management & Distribution Support

  • Take direct responsibility for coordinating and directing vehicle and foot traffic during peak distribution hours to prevent congestion, accidents, or unsafe conditions.
  • Work in close coordination with volunteers, staff, and contracted personnel to ensure safe and efficient movement of vehicles and guests on-site.
  • Provide clear and calm direction to drivers and pedestrians, using signage, verbal instructions, and safety gear when needed.
  • Serve as a visible deterrent to unsafe or disorderly behavior during food distribution, engaging respectfully and actively to de-escalate conflicts.

Security Operations & Staff Oversight

  • Coordinate and manage daily and event-specific schedules for all contracted security officers.
  • Lead onboarding, training, and supervision of contracted security and volunteers to ensure compliance with Gleaners’ policies and expectations.
  • Maintain accurate documentation including daily activity logs, incident reports, and access control records.

Emergency Response & Safety Protocols

  • Serve as the point of contact for all security-related incidents, accidents, or emergencies, including after-hours response.
  • Execute emergency response procedures including evacuation, shelter-in-place, and coordination with first responders.
  • Monitor weather conditions and communicate timely alerts and response protocols to staff, volunteers, and guests.

Customer Service & Representation

  • Maintain a professional, approachable, and service-oriented demeanor when interacting with guests, volunteers, staff, and partners.
  • Provide assistance with inquiries and clearly communicate food bank rules in a way that upholds dignity and respect.

System & Program Management

  • Operate and respond appropriately using various security systems, including two-way radios, emergency phones, alarm systems (fire, intrusion, smoke, heat), and surveillance.
  • Collaborate with the Facilities Manager and other departments to evaluate and strengthen the organization’s overall physical security program.
  • Actively participate in Gleaners Safety Committee. 
  • Build and maintain relationships with local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency responders to ensure coordinated safety efforts.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience of The Security Manager:

  • High School Diploma or HSE (High School Equivalency)
  • Three (3) years of proven experience in security and first response
  • CPR, First-Aid, AED certification or proof of attainment within 6 months of employment
  • Conflict resolution training preferred, but not required
  • Bilingual preferred

  • Ability to work comfortably within a fast-paced and matrixed organization.
  • Possesses excellent analytical skills and ability to apply sound judgment in problem solving, evaluating courses of action, and making decisions on complex security matters
  • Proficient computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to operate sophisticated surveillance systems
  • Ability to read with understanding and write effectively
  • Ability to communicate effectively to customers and co-workers
  • Working knowledge of neighbor service standards
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of law enforcement, security and fire inspection procedures
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently.
  • Reliable, responsible, detailed, and deadline oriented. 
  • Appreciation and respect for diverse people and confidentiality of information
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings and holidays
