The Licensed Practical Nurse supports Cumberland Heights’ mission of providing the highest quality care possible in a cost-effective manner for persons and families who are at risk for or who are suffering from the disease of chemical dependency. POSITION SUMMARY

The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for implementing and evaluating the direct care of detoxification and rehabilitation patients. This position also oversees the work of medical and clinical assistants as assigned. The Staff Nurse/LPN reports to the Charge Nurse and/or the Nursing Shift Supervisor.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  1. Implements/supervises the plan of care for detoxification patients, evaluating effectiveness of plan based on pertinent clinical findings.
  2. Interprets, transcribes, implements or supervises implementation of physician’s orders according to established policies and procedures.
  3. Administers and documents medications according to established policies and procedures with the exception of IV medication.
  4. Triages all rehabilitation patients, treating and referring according to physician’s orders and established policies and procedures, consulting with RN staff as needed.
  5. Oversees the work of medical and clinical assistants as assigned.
  6. Implements and evaluates strategies to manage physical health problems, including teaching.
  7. Performs CPR and First Aid as needed, including the use of automatic external defibrillator according to established policies and procedures 
  8. Documents pertinent clinical information into the electronic patient record.
  9. Acts as Charge Nurse for shift as assigned, with telephone backup of RN/MD at all times
  10. manages the overall operations of assigned shift
  11. coordinates administrative tasks for unit, including medication record/chart audit and emergency medication/equipment audit
  12. Ensures that a welcoming, safe and healing environment is maintained for each patient and family throughout the continuum of care.
  13. Recommends ways to improve the quality and delivery of services.
  14. Maintains confidentiality of company and patient information.
  15. Reacts productively to change.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned, including those of Patient Care Partner (see related job description).

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None except when assigned Charge; in that capacity, supervises other LPN staff members and medical assistants on assigned shift, consulting with the ADON/DON as needed; 


Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited school of practical nursing with current Tennessee LPN license in good standing required.
  • One (1) year post licensure medical/surgical experience preferred; particularly in behavioral healthcare.
  • CPI, First Aid/CPR and automatic external defibrillation certification required or eligible
  • Intermediate computer skills including Microsoft (Outlook, Word and Excel)
  • Ability to quickly learn and use various clinical software
  • Ability to problem-solve, analyze, and interpret information.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and patient needs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and make crucial decisions while also knowing when consultation is needed.
  • Ability to be open and culturally sensitive to a wide variety of patients’ experiences.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively speak, read and write in English.
  • Ability to interact with patients and co-workers in a collaborative and courteous manner while providing guidance, instruction, and/or training.
  • Ability to apply information regarding cultural/age/population specific characteristics to patient care.
  • Reacts productively to change.
  • Ability to de-escalate a person in crisis in a calm and supportive manner; work calmly and professionally in stressful situations and ally with people in crisis.
  • If recovering, two (2) years of verifiable abstinence required; active participation in a twelve-step program preferred.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Position is in a rehabilitation setting on a campus that involves walking outside to various buildings and everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions. 
  • Position requires frequent contact with chemically impaired persons in crisis, including those who are emotionally volatile and may require additional safety precautions.
  • May perform CPR/First Aid as needed (being certified or eligible is required)
  • Position is subject to varying shifts, including weekends as well as staying overnight for inclement weather as part of critical staffing, along with some travel to other off-site Cumberland Heights facilities/campus
  • Ability to lift up to 30lbs and/or push pull up to 100lbs; move around campus on uneven and rural terrain.
  • Ability to speak, hear, see, sit, walk, stand, kneel, stoop, balance, reach, and use fine/gross motor skills.
