  Primary Purpose: 
 
 Assist the Special Education Teacher with providing special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Assist students with their curricula, lessons and other instructional materials to match student ability levels.  
 
  Qualifications: 
 
 Minimum of a high school education or the equivalent as determined by the General 
 
 Education Development Test (GED)and 48 Semester hours of college work obtained from an    accredited institution of higher education; or 
 
 Associate’s degree or higher obtained from an accredited institution of higher education; or 
 
 High School Diploma or equivalent and pass a state approved Para Pro Assessment; or 
 
 High School Diploma or equivalent and show demonstratable proficiency in reading and writing skills 
 
 Primary Functions and Essential Duties: 
  
 In performing the primary function and essential duties of this position, confidentiality must be maintained at all times. 
 Conduct small group instruction as indicated from the IEP and under the direction of the special education teacher. 
 
  Display knowledge of content area provided by special education and general education teachers. 
 
  Conduct inclusion services as indicated from the IEP, consulting teacher, special education and general education classroom teacher. 
 
  Maintain and follow through with discipline procedures according to individual teacher's plans and child's IEP. 
 
  Toilet, feed, lift, position and change diapers of students as needed. 
 
  Serve as an assistant to students in the school or transportation setting as determined by the IEP and assigned by the director of special education. 
 
  Have a working knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of special education services. 
 
  Take specific directions and maintain a positive attitude. 
 
  Follow direction with initiative, flexibility and motivation. 
 
  Obtain other certifications and training as required by State Department of Education or the McMinn County School System. 
 
  Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation of all services provided to students. 
 
 Any other duties as assigned by the Director of Schools, Special Education Supervisor or the McMinn County Board of Education.

 Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer, and other instructional equipment 
 
 Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

 Lifting: May require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, control behavior through physical restraint, assist non-ambulatory students, and lift and move adaptive and other classroom equipment; may work prolonged or irregular hours 
 
 Environment: Exposure to biological hazards 
 
 Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress
