POSITION SUMMARY:

The Logistics Supervisor is responsible for administering programs, policies, and procedures for the Logistics Department, including scheduling, routing, and assignments of drivers, and vehicles. This position will submit recommendations for the development of, and compliance with, logistics/transportation programs, policies, and procedures. The Logistics Supervisor plans directs and implements vehicle scheduling, allocation, dispatching, licensing, and communication functions in accordance with established policies. The Logistics Supervisor will also conduct continuous analyses of vehicle and driver assignments analyzing scheduling for possible efficiencies and consolidation. This position communicates and coordinates with material and service providers such as, but not limited to collision repair, fuel, maintenance, tires, fleet wash, etc. to ensure fleet meets all federal, state, and local regulations (i.e., Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Department of Transportation (DOT)).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Reliable, consistent, on-site attendance is a requirement. This position requires punctuality and dependable attendance to meet the needs of the business, including attending and participating in meetings and presentations.
  2. Serves as a point of contact for all assigned staff within the logistics department.
  3. Works with leadership staff to develop, implement, and enforce policies, processes, and objectives, including administering corrective actions.
  4. Monitors the Logistics operations to ensure drivers comply with the company rules, safety procedures, government regulations, and evaluations.
  5. Holds all professional drivers, within the logistics department, accountable for their responsibilities and desired outcomes.
  6. Investigates, verifies and resolves customer complaints.
  7. Supervises material and service providers who perform repairs and maintain company vehicles.
  8. Conducts periodic yard checks of all properties where company equipment is staged/stored.
  9. Reviews and analyzes reports, such as Driver Trip Reports, Metrics, etc. for trends and recommends changes.
  10. Utilizes all available software for trends and makes recommendations based on data collected.
  11. Supervises dispatching routes for incoming donations, backhauls, line hauls, and deliveries to customers and coordinates the day-to-day department routing with the Logistics Router.
  12. Organizes and facilitates weekly huddles with Lead Drivers and schedules quarterly meetings.
  13. Ensures Lead Drivers hold daily huddles before the start of every shift.
  14. Ensures logs are kept of attendance huddle topics.
  15. Conducts staff performance reviews and addresses all disciplinary actions in a timely manner.
  16. Conducts driver training in accordance with DOT and Houston Food Bank (HFB) regulations and maintains training files for records.
  17. Maintains fleet maintenance files in accordance with DOT and HFB regulations.
  18. Promotes staff development within the logistics department.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages one (1) or more direct reports by providing guidance and/or oversight to employees and/or contractors. Develops and maintains roles, responsibilities, and expectations. Practices performance management in support of employee development, and perform administrative duties associated with being a people manager. Responsibilities include interviewing, planning, assigning, directing work, and resolving problems. Responsibilities also include sponsoring and participating in and/or supporting project teams sponsored by other management team members.


Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • High School Diploma from an accredited school or general education development (GED) certificate, Associates degree preferred 
  • 2+ years of supervisory/management experience
  • 3+ years of experience in Logistics or a related field


Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

  • Must obtain Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License within 6 months in position
  • Approved 3-Year (Clean/Clear/No Violations) Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) 
  • Must be able to pass the Department of Transportation (DOT) Physical
  • Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and insurance

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of motor vehicle operations, traffic rules, DOT regulations, and maintenance of motor vehicles
  • Knowledge of tracking and dispatch software (i.e., Samsara)
  • Ability to learn new software systems, smartphones, and driver apps
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including but not limited to Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to operate a liftgate
  • Ability to operate a manual and electric pallet jack
  • Ability to maintain records of materials, supplies, time, and work performed
  • Ability to accurately prepare and maintain files, reports, and records
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The employee is regularly required to move about the office and around the facility, use hands, wrists, and fingers to grip, type, and write. The employee will need to have the average ability to hear horns, warnings, and alerts associated with a warehouse. The employee is occasionally required to travel to other sites for business.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While the job is generally performed in an enclosed office environment, the employee is occasionally exposed to freezers, enclosed and/or tight spaces, wet and/or humid conditions, areas in which moving mechanical parts, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals are present, strong food-related smells, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the office environment is typically quiet, but the employee will be occasionally exposed to loud noise levels (e.g., horns, fans). The employee must frequently lift up to 25 pounds and/or lift/move up to 25 pounds. 


TRAVEL REQUIRED:

Travel is required for this position to and from our different locations (up to 10% of the time and on a domestic basis within our 18-county service area as needed).


This role supports all hours of operations at the Houston Food Bank facilities as necessary and requires a flexible work schedule.
