  • Position Duties

    • Performs street maintenance and repair tasks using shovels, tampers, rakes, jack hammers and other hand equipment; pouring and shoveling asphalt, concrete, gravel, hot and cold patch, oil and similar materials; drives one of a variety of vehicles on a daily basis; receives training in the operation and care of vehicles and equipment used.
    • Repairs curbing, storm sewers, and sidewalks using a jack hammer, picks, shovels, and other related equipment. Fragments curbing and sidewalks for replacement and removal; places forms, shapes and finishes concrete and patches adjoining road surfaces; and jets storm sewers as needed.
    • Repairs yards and fences: replaces or repairs catch basins, culverts, retaining walls and broken drainage pipe.
    • Operates various equipment and drives various vehicles for the removal of snow and application of road salt to Village streets, lots and municipal areas during inclement weather.
    • Performs graffiti removal by scouring surfaces of buildings, walls, fences and other outdoor structures to remove paint utilizing the soda blaster graffiti removal system. Repairs surfaces that have been cleaned, including painting, staining, and sanding. Responsible for graffiti removal on all areas within Village boundaries, including private property and the public right-of-way.
    • Repairs or replaces regulatory or indicator signs within the Village jurisdiction; manufactures required signs.
    • Performs minor maintenance on tools and equipment.
    • Follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor. Reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible, but no later than end of the employee's work shift. Follows recognized safe work practices.
    • Responds to emergency calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
    • Performs other duties as requested or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated.

    Physical Requirements

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

    • Stand, walk, and sit
    • Use hands to finger, handle, or feel for hot and cold, and to feel for smoothness
    • Reach with hands and arms to load and unload trucks, use power tools, or finish concrete
    • Balance or climb into a truck or up and down a ladder at least 6 feet high
    • Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl on the ground to finish concrete or to repair storm sewer basins
    • Talk, hear, and smell the difference between gas and diesel fuel

    The employee must frequently lift and/or move sign materials up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move concrete blocks or mortar bags up to 100 pounds.

    Specific vision abilities required by this job include:

    • Close vision (e.g., working with nuts, bolts, and small parts during equipment repair)
    • Distance vision
    • Color vision (e.g., matching paint and stain during graffiti removal)
    • Peripheral vision (e.g., while driving)
    • Depth perception (e.g., while working in close or confined spaces)
    • Ability to adjust focus

    The employee must be available and present for work as scheduled. All job functions must be performed safely and efficiently at all times, in compliance with all safety regulations and policies, for the safety and welfare of the employee, co-workers, and the public.

    Other Qualifications

    High school diploma or general education degree (GED); two years of experience in street, construction, or water/sewer maintenance and repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Requires possession of a valid Class B Illinois Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Air Brake endorsement, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
