Reporting to the Chief Content Officer, the Editor-in-Chief is responsible for overseeing the editorial strategy, voice, brand identity and growth of SHE Media’s parenting brand SheKnows across all platforms, establishing it as a trusted authority for parents of tweens and teens.

The role of Editor-in-Chief will manage and direct a team of 5 to 7 editors committed to the SheKnows brand, along with shared resources in marketing. The Editor-in-Chief will be responsible for creating synergies within certain areas of operation, such as design and video production using SHE Media shared resources. 

The Editor-in-Chief will create cross-platform priorities in accordance with traffic and audience goals across editorial and key social platforms. The role will also work closely with our Teen Council of kids ages 13 to 20, as well as our emerging Parenting Council of influential parents of teens. The Editor-in-Chief will build the strategy to engage members of both Councils to provide personal stories and original insights in multiple formats. This includes interviewing experts and Council members for first-person essays and quotes in our own original content, as well as assigning and editing submissions from our Council members for contributed pieces.

The SheKnows team will develop an ongoing strategy to publish new research and insights in partnership with relevant organizations and in collaboration with the Teen and Parenting Councils. Likewise, the SheKnows editorial team will track and report on teen parenting research, trends and news to extract the issues and services impacting parents of teens today.

The ideal candidate will be highly entrepreneurial with a growth mindset. She/he will be self-motivated, collaborative, and passionate about creating best-in-class content and community for parents. This person should have a strong leadership position in digital media publishing, content marketing and experience in overseeing or creating original, insightful and provocative parenting content. She/he must have excellent communication and problem-solving skills, an obsession with performance metrics, and the ability to build and maintain relationships with external contributors. 

The Work: 

  • Ideate, research and produce engaging high-quality parenting content for SheKnows across key categories of health, entertainment, lifestyle and shopping
  • Recruit, assign and edit freelance writers for original content on the SheKnows site
  • Plan and manage editorial and social calendars, ensuring key tentpoles and subjects are being covered on a regular cadence
  • Oversee social media strategy with a focus on Meta, TikTok and Pinterest
  • Develop and execute newsletter strategy for the SheKnows brand
  • Strategize and produce digital issues and destinations for the SheKnows brand, including those that are sponsored
  • Maintain brand and editorial guidelines, ensuring consistent messaging across distribution channels
  • Optimize content for SEO, AEO, social, syndication and other referral sources, and leverage traffic analytics to increase engagement and grow audience
  • Build relationships and engage with external parenting experts
  • Stay current on latest trends and developments in parenting and teen culture to inform content strategies and communications
  • Represent the SheKnows brand at industry events as needed

The Fine Print:

  • 15-20+ years of professional writing, audience development and editorial leadership, specifically within women’s lifestyle and parenting brands
  • 10+ years of editorial and marketing management
  • Proven ability to build community based on shared interests. Examples include advisories, contributor communities, expert panels, ‘insider’ groups, focus groups, parent circles, etc.
  • Strong editorial judgment and ability to distill complex scientific information into easily digestible and engaging content for readers
  • A demonstrated understanding of digital strategy, analytics, ROI investment, newsletter and social growth
  • A network of exceptional writers and strong roster of industry contacts
  • Ability to participate in and lead conversations with senior level executives across all media departments and with Penske Media Corp
  • Proven experience in relationship development with key talent, celebrities and influencers

Typical wage range: $150k - $180k. Factors that could be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, years of experience and comparison to current employees already in this role.
