Primary Purpose of Position

The Trauma Acute Care RN provides medical care services required during Military Treatment Facility (MTF) operations. The RN is responsible for providing clinically competent medical care services within their scope of practice. The RN working at any Defense Health Agency (DHA) site is responsible for safe patient care and ensuring adherence to all Policies and Procedures.


Work Schedule/Duty Hours: Personnel will be required to work on a rotating schedule. Shifts shall be eight (8) hours in length - not to exceed eighty (80) hours per two-week period). Meal periods will be either thirty (30) or forty-five (45) minutes, depending on the schedule. All scheduling is based on the needs of the government and must be coordinated with the designated supervisor.


Core Duties:

The list of core duties below is not exhaustive and may be supplemented and changed, as necessary.


· Clinical Data Management and Quality Review

o Assists the Trauma Program Manager (TPM) and Trauma Medical Director (TMD) in developing and maintaining a comprehensive Trauma and Acute Care Surgery (TACS) Program.

o Ensures timely and accurate concurrent and retrospective reviews of trauma patients’ (civilian and military) medical records for inclusion criteria, data element abstraction, and identification of complications and/or performance improvement filters for further review by the Trauma Acute Care Surgery team, peer review, and performance improvement processes.

o Serves as an alternate for the Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator as directed by TPM for such activities such as pulling standardized/ad hoc reports, creating power point presentations, and documenting meeting minutes. • Reports variances in patient care to TMD and coordinates follow up activities as needed to correct variances.

o Assists the TPM with Department of Defense Trauma Registry (DoDTR), trauma education research and injury prevention.

o Conducts concurrent and retrospective reviews of trauma patient records to identify inclusion criteria, complications, and performance improvement (PI) filters.

o Ensures compliance with data abstraction standards and inter-rater reliability (=95% compliance on quarterly audits).

o Creates standardized and ad hoc reports, performs data analysis, and presents findings to support trauma care optimization.


· Performance Improvement and Patient Safety

o Leads gap analyses for compliance with American College of Surgeons (ACS) Trauma Verification standards.

o Develops and implements project plans to address identified gaps in the Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) program.

o Apply methodologies such as PDCA, Lean Six Sigma, Root Cause Analysis, and Failure Mode Effect Analysis to develop and evaluate corrective actions.

o Supports peer review processes by facilitating meetings, collecting, and analyzing data, and identifying operational issues impacting care.


· Program Coordination and Multidisciplinary Collaboration

o Serves as liaison to the multidisciplinary team, support trauma rounds, discharge planning, and committee meetings.

o Coordinates multimedia and telehealth resources for trauma-related meetings and consultations.

o Documents trauma rounds and meeting minutes in the electronic health record per policy.

o Provides weekly Trauma Round notes in patient’s electronic health record from multidisciplinary discharge planning meetings as prescribed by departmental/ hospital policy.

o Provides strategic (non-medical) direction to team leaders and supports alignment with organizational quality initiatives.


· Education, Research and Policy Development

o Provides education and training on performance improvement and patient safety methodologies.

o Assists with trauma education, injury prevention, and research initiatives.

o Writes and reviews policies, procedures, and clinical practice guidelines based on evidence-based protocols.

o Participates in tele-mentoring, telemedicine, and tele-consults.


· Clinical Practice and Patient Care

o Rounds with the TACS team and assists in coordinating inpatient services.

o Provides direct patient care, including assessment, treatment, and emergency response.

o Administers medications and IV therapies, including blood products and TPN, and performs phlebotomy as required.

o Ensures appropriate documentation and supervises care provided by other healthcare professionals.

o Make patient care assignments based on scope of practice and skill level.

o Recognizes and responds to adverse signs and symptoms in emergency situations.

o Provides care to both adult and pediatric patients, following standing orders and demonstrating competency in moderate sedation (if applicable).


· Compliance and External Collaboration

o Ensures adherence to standards of care and practice in accordance with MTF policies and guidelines.

o Maintains 55% compliance on quarterly audits of 10% of patient records (or as assigned) to ensure inter-rater reliability.

o Serves as liaison with the Joint Trauma System and external facilities on trauma-related PI and safety issues.

o Participates in hospital committees such as Patient Safety, Infection Control, and Quality Improvement.


· Additional Duties

o Conducts literature reviews and supports clinical research to improve trauma care outcomes.

o Performs waived testing and laboratory collections as needed.

o Completes all other duties assigned by TPM or TMD.

Physical Demands:

Bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, lifting/carrying up to fifty (50) lbs., handling (holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with the hand or hands), fingering (picking, pinching, fine manipulation), sitting, standing for long periods of time, and walking. Seeing and hearing alarms and settings during and after business hours and responding according to training and procedures. Setting and resetting devices with small knobs and handles.

Requirements

Required Qualifications


Education

· Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

· Graduate from a college or university accredited by National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). As an alternative to the education requirements in the basic contract, the candidate may be a graduate of a state accredited professional nursing program OR a program accredited by Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).


Experience

· Minimum of 5 years of concurrent nursing experience with 3 years in either critical care or trauma nursing, emergency nursing, or inpatient perioperative nursing. 

· Trauma PI Coordinator must have the above nursing experience plus one year minimum of Performance Improvement or Patient Safety experience or proof of comparable education/training. 

· Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel) for Trauma Nurse Coordinator position and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point) for Trauma PI Coordinator position. 

· Experience in nursing documentation in an electronic health record system.

· Must possess the ability to communicate respectfully and work collaboratively with team members and outside departmental personnel.


Licensure and Certification

· Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the United States.

· Active CPR/BLS.


Board Certification

· Trauma Certified Registered Nurse


Citizenship

· Must be a United States Citizen.


Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with Veterans, Service Members, and Federal Employees.
