About the Department

SUMMARY

Performs skilled groundskeeping duties to support the maintenance and presentation of Jackson College’s athletic fields (baseball, softball, and soccer) as well as general campus grounds. Responsible for ensuring athletic surfaces are safe, attractive, and competition-ready, while also maintaining lawns, landscaping beds, trees, shrubs, walkways, and outdoor areas across campus. 


Must demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, pride in a job well done, and a proactive approach to creating a welcoming and professional campus environment.

Monday-Friday 8am-5pm

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING:  OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED:


  • Prepare and maintain athletic fields for practices, games, and events, including mowing, dragging, edging, lining, raking, and topdressing.
  • Manage turf health through watering, fertilizing, aerating, and repairing worn or damaged areas.
  • Maintain infield clay, warning tracks, soccer goal areas, and irrigation systems for peak performance and safety.
  • Operate specialized turf equipment such as tractors, aerators, line markers, drags, and utility vehicles.
  • Coordinate with Athletics staff to ensure fields are ready for scheduled events.
  • Perform mowing, trimming, edging, pruning, mulching, planting, and seasonal landscaping across campus.
  • Clean and maintain campus walkways, entrances, drives, and parking lots.
  • Pick up debris and maintain the professional appearance of grounds.
  • Provide snow and ice removal from sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots and support custodial team during winter months.
  • Assist in preventative maintenance and care of grounds-related equipment.
  • Respond to work assignments in a timely, professional, and respectful manner.
  • Assist with campus events and setups as directed.
  • Collaborate with Facilities team members during peak times or special projects.
  • Support College mission, vision, values, and guiding documents through daily work practices.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:

Internal: Daily contact with Athletics and Facilities staff; regular interaction with other College departments in a service provider capacity.


External: Interaction with students, visiting athletic teams, College leaders, and community members in a service provider capacity.

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license with no restrictions.
  • Ability to operate grounds and turf maintenance equipment (mowers, trimmers, utility vehicles, etc.).
  • Physically able to perform demanding tasks, including lifting up to 100 lbs., bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed for  events.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and professional appearance.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience in groundskeeping, turf management, landscaping, or related field.
  • Experience maintaining athletic fields, including baseball, softball, or soccer.
  • Knowledge of turf care, field layout, irrigation systems, and fertilizer/pesticide application.
  • Effective communication skills and professional demeanor.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot equipment and field conditions.
  • Cooperative, team-oriented attitude with a strong commitment to service.

WORK ENVIROMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is assigned to outdoor work which includes hot, cold, wet and/or humid conditions; and occasionally fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; and vibration.
