    About The Role

    Completes credit analysis and writes credit request presentations for new loans, loan renewals, and periodic reviews, as well as other related activities, for Commercial & Industrial and Commercial Real Estate transactions. This position requires advanced understanding of GAAP principles, credit risk analysis, and a wide variety of loan types. The Senior Commercial Underwriter must independently ensure timely, accurate presentations are completed in accordance with expectations.
    This position will communicate frequently with Senior Management officers, business or professional representatives from outside groups, agencies, and organizations.   

    RESPONSIBILITIES  

    • Complete analysis process by creating final Credit Request for presentation to credit approvers.
    • Document and support the recommendation for all requests analyzed, inclusive of material elements of risk and opportunity, structure, terms, pricing and loan grade.
    • Perform analysis of financial information provided by Borrowers and Guarantors and produce clear and concise assessments of cash flow, financial position and resilience, strength of balance sheets, quality of collateral, and industry/market risks based on financial reports of varying quality and sophistication.
    • Based on analysis conclusions, assign risk rating for proposed loan in line with established internal and external rating processes with a clear monitoring strategy for loan requests.
    • Evaluate risk rating, loan purpose, borrower financial position, and collateral quality, to determine compliance of loan structure and pricing with established institutional risk tolerances and yield goals to recommend improvements to loan structure and monitoring, as appropriate.
    • Identify any NCUA or DFI regulatory exceptions and eliminate them in partnership with the Relationship Manager and assigned staff prior to submission of a credit presentation for approval.
    • Responsible for required monitoring functions for the Commercial Loan portfolio, including compliance with reporting and financial indicator covenants, loan modifications, maturing loans, and annual reviews.
    • Maintain sound communications with manager and MBL officers regarding current work status, developing complications and discussion of suggestions when needed.
    • Participate as requested in loan officer business development calls, pre-flight needs and research meetings with members.
    • In coordination with assigned staff, assist Relationship Managers in the submission of third-party assessment orders (appraisals, environmental evaluations, collateral examinations, business valuations, etc.) consistent with the informational needs to complete collateral analyses needed for credit requests.
    • Actively participates in all internal and external audits by assembling all requested information and files and providing answers to audit questions to the appropriate credit union personnel.
    • Perform various business-related duties such as answering phones, filing and recordkeeping, coordinating meetings, etc.
    • Pursue additional learning opportunities through active reading on topics impacting the industries we lend in, regulatory changes, and skills development topics.
    • Actively participate in staff meetings by suggesting productivity improvements and being proactive in problem resolution.
    • Participate in department activities that enhance the work efforts and achievement of department and credit union goals.
    • Contribute to department by taking the initiative to assist co-workers.
    • Exercise effective judgment in decisioning loans within the assigned lending authority. For requests outside of these limits, document sound conclusions for approval recommendations provided to the VP Credit Risk.

    REQUIREMENTS 

    • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field or equivalent years of experience.
    • 5+ years of commercial underwriting or business lending experience.
    • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with ability to manage complex credit requests independently.
    • Ability to work in a team environment by accurately and satisfactorily completing work assignments with limited supervision.
    • Understand, explain, and recommend loans of varying complexity.
    • Demonstrated skills in handling complex work assignments in various banking functions.
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills to work successfully with the public (non-experts), as well as other employees.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Etc.) and financial and/or tax analysis programs (e.g. nCino, Moody’s, etc.).

    COMPENSATION

    $105,000-$115,000/ year
