Assistant Coach - Roles and Responsibilities

Coaching Philosophy

This position requires loyalty to the players, fellow members of the coaching staff, and Avon Old Farms School. This includes maintaining honest and open communication, demonstrating trust in the head coach, and being consistently available to support the players.

While all opinions are welcome—and may be critical, constructive, and well-articulated behind closed doors—the final decisions related to the program must be accepted and respected. Once decisions are made, we present a united front.

A coach must approach practice as a classroom—fostering a collaborative, positive environment. To be clear, classroom teaching experience is not a prerequisite for this role. However, the game demands simplicity, structure, and repetition—and you must be prepared to deliver all three.

This position does not require an especially strong understanding of the game as much as a willingness to emphasize key fundamentals, which will be made clear by the head coach.

Responsibilities

1. Off-Court Skills.

• Communicate with the team in collecting and using information (meal orders, gear orders)
• Be willing and prepared to watch game film, either with the staff or with players

2. Basketball Skills

• Some on-court physical requirements including catching and throwing passes, standing in place
• Scout opponents when they live stream their games (shared responsibility with the head coach)
• Open the gym when players look for extra work
• Enthusiasm. Please bring positive energy.
