Join our Natural Systems and Restoration Bureau  

This is a great opportunity to restore priority water bodies for future generations. The Southwest Florida Water Management District (District), a leader in protecting Florida's water resources, is seeking an Engineer in support of the Surface Water Improvement and Management (SWIM) Program. This position will work on a wide variety of projects related to natural systems restoration and water quality improvements in a planned effort to restore our most valuable natural resources. The successful candidate will perform project management duties including district initiatives, cooperative funding, application evaluations, contract management, negotiations, construction monitoring, hydraulic/hydrologic model review, stormwater retrofit design, plan review, working with cooperators, project tracking, and cost tracking. 

The District supports a remote work schedule to promote work-life balance for eligible employees. This role is considered hybrid, which means the employee will be required to come on-site for periodic meetings or work a portion of their time from a designated location and the remainder of their time remotely. Full-time in office schedule is also available. The successful candidate must be a Florida resident

Starting Compensation:

Staff Engineer: $61,254.00 - $84,422.50
Professional Engineer: 
$66,180.00 - $91,203.50
Senior Professional Engineer: 
$71,460.00 - $98,476.00

The starting salary ranges are included for the Engineer profile which reflects the minimum to approximately 50% of the respective pay grades. The starting salary will be based on the education and experience of the successful candidate. The District conducts annual performance evaluations that may award applicable pay increases based on positive employee performance.

Essential Functions

  • Engineering lead for large scale environmental restoration and water quality improvement projects.
  • Perform feasibility studies, watershed/water quality studies.
  • Prepare construction documents and request for bids.
  • Develop scopes of work and assist in budgeting process.
  • Administration of public and private entity contracts.
  • Project management reporting.
  • Evaluation of cooperative funding applications.
  • Construction administration and inspection.
  • Engineering support for SWIM Plan preparation.

Required Credentials for Engineer Opportunities

 Staff Engineer

  • Bachelors degree (or higher) in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field
  • Two (2) years related work experience
  • Valid driver's license 

Professional Engineer

  • Bachelors degree (or higher) in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field
  • Four (4) years related work experience
  • Valid Florida Professional Engineer license
  • Valid driver's license

Senior Professional Engineer

  • Bachelors degree (or higher) in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field
  • Five (5) years related work experience
  • Valid Florida Professional Engineer license
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Credentials for Engineer Opportunities

  • Masters or better in civil, construction, environmental engineering, or related field.
  • Project Management Information System experience
  • Water quality project experience
  • Natural systems restoration experience
  • Certified Construction Manager
  • Florida Professional Engineer License

Additional Details

This position is typically scheduled to work 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, out of the Brooksville or Tampa, FL office. Remote work opportunities may be available up to 4 days per week. This position is eligible for compensatory time for hours worked over 40 hours, in a week.

Yes. Some travel, using District vehicle, within District's coverage area.
