Description
The Curriculum and Academic Instructor works in coordination with the Principal and school administrators as an instructional support/mentor while also teaching classes as necessary. He/she coaches direct care teachers in the implementation of the approved curriculum by the school consistent with the regulatory requirements of the Maryland State Department of Education through modeling best practices in their classroom and providing professional development.
The Curriculum and Academic Instructor directly mentors/coach’s faculty in the development of differentiated instructional planning and techniques to modify instruction to best meet the needs of all learners. He/she supports educators in the accurate interpretation of current assessment data and scores that measure growth in student achievement. Participation and provision of staff development training are ongoing and in collaboration with the school Principal.

Accountability
The Curriculum and Academic Instructor reports to the School Principal and is responsible for coaching/mentoring teachers and assistant teachers while completing expected classroom duties and lesson plans. He/she collaborates with the School Principal on performance reviews.
Qualifications
Job Qualifications
- MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE IN TEACHING STUDENTS WITH AUTISM
- MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH NON-VERBAL STUDENTS WITH AUTISM
- Masters degree in Education preferred
- MSDE Teaching certificate required
- A minimum of five (5) years of classroom teaching experience preferably serving students with emotional disabilities, autism, and/or intellectual disabilities.
- Successful candidates will possess excellent oral and written communication skills, computer proficiency, management and/or supervision experience, program implementation skills, and demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse disciplines and individuals.
- A thorough understanding of COMAR regulations pertaining to educating children with disabilities including emotional disturbance, multiple handicaps, and autism, and the certification requirements for operating a nonpublic school.
- Thorough understanding of PL 105-17 I.D.E.A.
- Demonstrates staff mentoring and training skills.
- Understands and actualized the Guild School Model
- Experience in training staff on various special education topics including integrated curriculum, lesson plan development, character themes, instructional practices, classroom management, IEP development, assessment tools, portfolio assessment, data decision making and problem-solving employing brain-based learning strategies, staff engagement, and the power of culture.
- Experience with curriculum development and accommodations for special education students.
- Knowledge and understanding of brain-based learning, Transformation Education, the Basic School model, experiential education, assessment tools, performance-based instruction, and integrated curriculum instructional delivery.
- Experience with implementation and analysis of educational assessment results.
- Possesses management skills: the ability to prioritize tasks, time management, and multi-task.
- Understands MSDE Voluntary State Curriculum, differentiated instruction, brain-based learning strategies, integrated curriculum, experiential education.
