What You Will Be Doing:
In this long-term, non-permanent nutrition position, you will provide direct services to Alaskan participants of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children (WIC) who do not have a WIC program in their area, which at the time of writing includes Fairbanks NorthStar Borough and Southeast Alaska. 

You will also conduct both low-risk and high-risk nutrition counseling at least quarterly for each WIC participant; promote and educate participants about the benefits of breastfeeding; initiate outreach in the region to increase participation rates; conduct regulatory and compliance monitoring of grocery stores (ie WIC-approved vendors) that are approved to accept WIC food benefits; process WIC applications; issue WIC benefits; and, develop vital networking strategies to improve WIC service delivery. 

 Frequent Travel is required as part of this position.

This position is located in Juneau, Alaska 
The incumbent will provide direct nutrition and breastfeeding services to WIC participants from the Juneau Public Health Center located at 3412 Glacier Highway in Juneau, Alaska.
 
Who We Are Looking For:
The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following position-specific competencies in addition to the minimum qualifications listed below:  
  • Dietetics and Nutrition Education and Counseling - Knowledge and application of concepts, principles, and practices of the role of food and nutrition to assess, promote, educate, and counsel on nutritional benefits to improve health and prevent illness and disease in both individuals and their communities.
  • Breastfeeding Education and Counseling - Knowledge of lactation, human milk, and breastfeeding to promote, educate, and counsel on the health and nutritional benefits of breastfeeding. Understands impacts of pregnancy, post-partum, and lactation to provide individualized assessments and group counseling on nutrition, breastfeeding, and health issues.
  • Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.

:
  • Travel within the state of  Alaska by vehicle or small aircraft is expected and required. 
  • If an applicant does not meet the definition of a WIC Competent Professional Authority (CPA), the applicant will be required to obtain this credential through the State of Alaska (SOA) WIC CPA training program within nine months of hire. A WIC CPA is an employee of the local WIC program authorized to assess program eligibility, determine nutritional risk, provide nutrition education and counseling, and prescribe supplemental foods.

Training from an accredited college or university in any field and/or progressively responsible experience assisting with planning, coordinating, and implementing administrative controls, work processes, and/or procedures for a program, project, business, or organization.

 

Special Note: 

“Competencies” means a combination of interrelated knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that enable a person to act effectively in a job or situation.  


“Typically gained by” means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job.  


“Training” and “education” are synonyms for the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through formal and informal methods (such as classroom, online, self-study, and on-the-job), from accredited and unaccredited sources, and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree) and short-duration (such as a seminar) programs.
