About the Department

Position Information:

This is an  Open Competitive recruitment to create an eligibility list current vacancy and for future vacancies. Successful candidates are expected to work eight (8) hours a day, five (5) days a week, and twelve (12) months per school year. 

GENERAL PURPOSE
 

Under direction, plans, supervises, evaluates, and participates in the work of custodial personnel at an assigned elementary school or small school site or facility, as defined by the district; ensures the assigned school site is maintained in a neat, clean, sanitary, and safe condition; arranges and assists in arrangements of physical environment required for activities held at the school; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Incumbents in the Plant Supervisor 1 class are responsible for coordinating, performing, scheduling, and supervising custodial functions at an elementary school or small site or facility, as defined by the District. Incumbents perform a variety of custodial and minor maintenance duties during school hours and schedule and inspect the work of the custodial crew.

  • This classification is distinguished from the Plant Supervisor 2 and Plant Supervisor 3 classification, depending on the type and size of school site or facility. Incumbents in the Plant Supervisor 2 classification are responsible for coordinating, performing, scheduling, and supervising custodial functions at intermediate school or mid-size site or facility, as defined by the District. Incumbents in the Plant Supervisor 3 classification are responsible for the coordinating, performing, scheduling, and supervising of a large site or facility, including high schools, where the complexity of duties is greatest due to more faculty, students, activities, a larger, more complex plant, and a larger custodial staff to supervise. 

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  
 The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
 

  1. Performs and supervises custodial services duties required to maintain buildings and adjacent grounds areas at an assigned elementary school or small school site or facility in a neat, clean, sanitary, and safe condition; confers with school administration regarding custodial and maintenance needs of school buildings, grounds, and facilities.
      
  2. Trains, assigns, and evaluates the work of assigned custodial personnel; prepares and revises work schedules as necessary; organizes work to be completed and inspects completed work; establishes and enforces priorities.
      
  3. Unlocks doors and gates; raises and lowers flags; inspects buildings and grounds for damage, needed repairs, security, and safety hazards; performs security checks on facilities.
      
  4. Removes and covers graffiti from walls using solvents and paint; reports painting needs to appropriate maintenance personnel.
      
  5. Requests and maintains needed materials, supplies, and equipment; prepares and maintains records and reports.
      
  6. Accommodates community groups in the use of school facilities; prepares rooms, furniture, and equipment for special events; as directed, assigns custodial personnel to special events.
      
  7. Coordinates, directs, and participates in the cleaning of the school; vacuums and shampoos carpets; sweeps and washes outside walks and courts.
      
  8. Directs and performs light maintenance tasks such as installing pencil sharpeners and making minor repairs to desks, furniture, and other equipment.
      
  9. Prepares maintenance work orders and follows up to ensure completion of work performed.
      
  10. Catches animals on school grounds and contacts animal control personnel.
      
  11. Safely operates a variety of equipment used in the maintenance of the school grounds including floor buffers and strippers, vacuum cleaners, and ground air blowers; maintains custodial equipment in a clean, safe, and operative condition.
 

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  1. Methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial, grounds keeping, and general maintenance work.
      
  2. Requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
      
  3. Principles and practices of supervision and training.
      
  4. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
      
  5. Safe practices related to cleaning methods and procedures.
      
  6. Basic recordkeeping techniques and basic computer operations.
      
  7. School security requirements.
      
Ability to:

  1. Plan, schedule, and oversee custodial activities at an assigned facility.
      
  2. Estimate and order required custodial supplies and equipment.
      
  3. Confer with site administrators and supervisors regarding custodial needs, schedules, and concerns.
      
  4. Observe and report safety hazards and the need for maintenance and repair.
      
  5. Perform minor repairs to physical facilities.
      
  6. Train and evaluate personnel.
      
  7. Meet schedules and time lines.
      
  8. Communicate effectively.
      
  9. Estimate time and materials involved with the custodial program.
      
  10. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
      
  11. Move and arrange furniture and equipment for meetings and special events.
      
  12. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
      
  13. Lift heavy objects and perform heavy physical labor.
      
  14. Instruct others in the use of modern cleaning equipment.
      
  15. Work independently with little direction.
      
  16. Read, interpret, and follow rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
      
  17. Operate a variety of related machines, computer, and equipment.
Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalency or higher graduation, and;
      
  • Two (2) years of custodial experience in a school or related environment, which includes six (6) months of lead or supervisory experience in similar capacity.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

Listed below are examples of the physical aspects that this classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

  • Lift, carry, push, pull, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, walk, run, and crawl.
  • Perform moderate to heavy physical exertion.
  • Lift 50 pounds.
  • Carry 25 pounds.
  • Techniques to safely handle objects weighing up to 100 lbs, in teams or using specialized equipment.
  • Reach in all directions.
  • Stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Work at indoor and outdoor environment, with possible dry, cold, and wet weather.
  • Work at a desk, conference table, playgrounds or in meetings of various configurations.
