Qualifications

Primary Purpose:

To become a worthy employee of the district by safely and adequately performing duties associated with operation, maintenance repair and installation of electrical systems, fixtures, apparatus and equipment. 

                                                                 

Education/Certification:        

High school diploma or GED

Two years of formal technical training from State approved technical school training must be in an area related to job responsibilities (complete certification requirements), preferred

Valid Journey Electrician License

Must have valid Texas Driver’s License

 

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Must have enough command of the English language

Must possess basic computer skills in the operation of personal computers or display terminals-preferred

Basic training supervisory skills

Basic training in human relations

Basic knowledge of building repair and maintenance procedures

                       

Experience:

3+ years’ experience in the electrical field

Technical Skills, Responsibilities and Duties

 

In PSJA ISD, we hire individuals who demonstrate excellence in these technical areas as they lead others

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Studies blueprints and/or work orders and estimates worker-hours and materials required to complete job.
  • Read blueprints and/or other specifications to determine method of installation, work procedures, and material, tools and work aid requirements.
  • Inspects all work done by the Electrical Department to insure adherence to district’s standards and building codes.
  • Responds to or follow-up emergency calls until the problem has been corrected.
  • Provides leadership and training to the Electricians Helper(s) while performing assigned duties.
  • Continuously observes Electrician Helper(s) performance in the effort to provide a fair and just evaluation.
  • Plans layout, installs, and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment.
  • Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of material, to provide access for future maintenance, and to avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring, consistent with specification and local electrical codes.
  • Prepares sketches showing location of wiring and equipment or follows diagrams or blueprints, insuring that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future walls, ceilings, and flooring.
  • Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installs electrical conduit, using such tools and hacksaw, pipe threader, and conduit bender.
  • Pulls wiring through conduit assisted by electrician helper.
  • Splices wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads with knife or pliers, twisting or soldering wires together, and applying tape or terminal caps.
  • Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment, using hand tools.
  • Installs controls and distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays and circuit-breaker panels.
  • Connects power cables to equipment, such as electrical range or motor, and installs grounding leads.
  • Test continuity of circuit to insure electrical compatibility and safety of components, using testing instruments, such as ohmmeter, battery and buzzer, and oscilloscope.
  • Observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustment, relocation, or replacement.
  • May repair faulty equipment or systems.
  • Inspects lighting systems and advises of need to repair or upgrade.
  • May be on constant call to make emergency repairs.
  • Inspects and test electric distribution equipment and wiring outside and within buildings to verify conformance of installation with construction and building code specifications, or to determine feasibility of increasing electrical load.
  • Examines wires and auxiliary equipment, such as fuses, insulators, and switches to ascertain conformance to specifications on work orders, utilizing through knowledge of types, sizes, and styles of equipment.
  • Test lines, transformer, and other distribution equipment, using such devise as ohmmeters, voltmeter, and thermocouple indicators to measure voltage drop between points in circuitry, locate causes of electrical disturbances, and determining actual electrical load on system.
  • Test for temperature and presence of explosive gases in vicinity of electrified equipment.
  • Installs and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures and fuse boxes in prefabricated and modular homes, using hand tools.
  • Measures for location of receptacles with tape measure and installs receptacles.
  • Cuts and connects wires according to diagrams to install fixtures, such as switches, light fixtures, and fuse boxes.
  • May direct workers in boring holes in studs and running.
  • Performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as may be assigned.
