The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Senior Sustainability Officer to join our committed and passionate Sustainability Team. It is a great opportunity to develop, deliver and contribute to a range of environmental sustainability programs, including climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience within the community.
The Senior Sustainability Officer will be responsible for projects and programs that contribute towards creating a sustainable city and Council’s commitment to achieving zero net community emissions by 2040, and a city that achieves climate resilience through supporting the community to adapt to a changing climate.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
· Support and provide advice to the Coordinator Sustainability and Principal Sustainability Officer to ensure development and achievement of Council Plan and Health Plan, and MV2040 environmental targets and objectives.
· Support the Principal Sustainability Officer to deliver Council’s community carbon emissions reduction program, Let’s Go Zero Moonee Valley.
· Develop and deliver a range of initiatives to support the Moonee Valley community to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
· Coordinate community focused sustainability programs (eg. My Smart Garden) and climate resilient initiatives.
· Provide advice and support community-led initiatives, including building resilience to climate change through capacity building and technical advice.
· Represent Moonee Valley City Council in regional partnerships and external working groups/forums to strengthen shared climate and environmental sustainability outcomes.
· Participate in a range of regional projects and engage with partner organisations to deliver relevant opportunities to progress Council's and community's efforts on environmental and climate change issues.
· Undertake research and analysis to deliver up-to-date and timely advice on emerging trends, opportunities, policy, practice, innovation and technology in relevant areas of environmental sustainability and climate change.
· Undertake the role of Project Manager (or project team member) to deliver multi-disciplinary projects across Council, to help achieve sustainability outcomes, ensuring the agreed scope, timelines and budget constraints are met.
· Actively contribute to a positive team and organisational culture with a focus on customer service and value for the community.
Skills & Experience
· A tertiary qualification in climate change, Environmental Policy, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Environmental Sustainability, or a related field combined with relevant work and practical experience.
· Demonstrated experience working in a climate emergency focused role.
· An understanding of working in Local Government.
· Experience, knowledge and understanding of the relevant legislation for this role.
· Excellent computer literacy skills, competent in the MS-Office suite of program
