About the Department
Under general direction, supervises the activities of lead personnel, field crews and individuals in the maintenance and repair of public right-of-way improvements including, but not restricted to construction, installation, testing, maintenance and repair of City water distribution systems, water meters and/or backflow devices streets, curbs and sidewalks, street lights, and the manufacture, installation, repair and maintenance of traffic signs and markings; or street trees, actively participates in public works maintenance and repair activities; and does related work as required. Routinely operating small tools, light motorized equipment associated with these operations from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm. Coverage Monday through Friday, working in all weather extremes or working overtime as needed in all hours of the day or night.
Starting Salary up to $72,000
Position Duties
- Arrive at work every day on time as scheduled.
- Perform job related tasks as dictated by work orders or supervisor.
- Maintains daily and monthly logs and records of work performed and materials used; completes work orders and routine reports as required; utilizes and maintains computer programs and databases.
- Assist other departments as directed by supervisor.
- Evaluates maintenance operations and suggests improvements and modifications; prepares various reports on operations activities.
- Develops work plans and determines resource requirements; procures equipment and materials as needed for jobs.
- Coordinates with contractors in providing contract services.
- Monitors and controls supply and equipment; orders supplies and tools as necessary; prepares documents for purchasing equipment.
- Tactfully responds to questions and comments from the public, requests for service, and provides information to the public.
- Operates computers and other office equipment.
- Responsible for ensuring the safety of workers, equipment, and the public at a work site.
- Read and understand written job instructions and plans.
- Complete work orders and other necessary paperwork on the completion of assigned tasks or maintenance of equipment.
- Hear clearly and interpret hand signals when operating equipment.
- Inspects, operates, and maintains assigned Town vehicles, equipment, tools, and machinery in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Theory, principles, practices and techniques of public works and public utilities maintenance.
- Principles and practices of supervision and training.
- Principles and practices of occupational hazards and job safety precautions for type of work performed.
- Safe operation of power tools and equipment commonly used in the performance of public works, park and open space maintenance, construction, and tree work.
- Principles and practices of customer service.
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Water standards and detail drawings.
- Materials, methods, practices, tools, and equipment used in meter installation and maintenance operations (valves, meters, radio endpoints, meter boxes, and lids).
- Knowledge of water resource management, field inspection for construction or industrial projects, environmental inspection, and plan review.
- Applicable federal, state, and local law, applicable to public works and public utilities functions.
If assigned to the Public Works Streets Division, knowledge of:
- Equipment, materials, and methods used in the maintenance and construction of streets, traffic signs and markings, streetlights, and concrete curbing and sidewalks.
- Operate equipment such as air compressors, jackhammers, thermo-plastic equipment; concrete maintenance equipment and motor vehicles such as trucks, loaders, paint stripers, backhoes, forklifts, concrete grinders and other similar maintenance or construction equipment.
If assigned to the Public Works Utilities Division, knowledge of:
- Techniques, equipment and materials used in the installation, maintenance and repair of water mains, meters, valves, pumps, motors hydrants, services, and related facilities.
- Water standards and detail drawings.
- Materials, methods, practices, tools, and equipment used in meter installation and maintenance operations (valves, meters, radio endpoints, meter boxes, and lids).
- Knowledge of water resource management, field inspection for construction or industrial projects, environmental inspection, and plan review.

Formal Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent GED.
Relatable work experience:
- Six years of experience in water, wastewater, construction, utilities, streets, or a related field, including two years in a supervisory capacity. A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the role may also be considered.
Training (License and/or Certification):
- Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License “A” without restriction “L” and safe driving record
- For Supervisor positions in the Streets Division:
- Certification in International Erosion Control Association (IECA) or Certified professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) Certified professional in Erosion and Sediment Control-In Training (CPESC-IT) Certified Erosion, Sediment, or related, approved, certification or equivalent training within one year of employment.
- Noncommercial Political Pesticide Applicator License, Texas Department of Agriculture. or related, approved, certification or equivalent training within one year of employment.
- For Supervisor positions in the Utilities Division:
- Class B Water Distribution License, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, or related, approved, certification or equivalent training within one year of employment.
- Wastewater Collections Class III, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, or related, approved, certification or equivalent training within one year of employment.

Lift/Move/ Push/Pull | Lift up to 84 pounds of equipment parts or supplies and place in pickup bed (4’ high) for use in field. |
Vision | Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. |
Normal hours/ days of work | 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 40 hrs./week, with a Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday schedule depending on assignment; respond to after hours and weekend emergency situations. |
Description of daily work environment | The employee works in a mixed environment capacity, both office setting and outdoors, working under all temperature extremes as well as other adverse weather and environmental conditions typical to the field with a variety of noise levels. |
