About the Department
Under general supervision of Public Works Crew leader. Performs routine work operating large motorized equipment including mowers, knuckle booms, leaf trucks, sweepers, backhoes, mini excavators, tractors, bush-hogs, etc. Performs a variety of manual labor tasks as needed.
Position Duties
- Performs routine equipment operator work in maintaining and repairing infrastructure, facilities, and grounds.
- Performs semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of large, motorized equipment requiring special skill and attention to detail working around traffic and utilities.
- Performs building and grounds maintenance functions, including collection of yard waste, leaves, and bulky waste.
- Performs snow removal operations.
- Performs sidewalk repairs, maintains and repairs stormwater infrastructure and ditches, installs and repairs street signs, repairs street utility cuts and patches potholes.
- Performs preventative maintenance and service on equipment.
- May work as a crew leader during the assigned crew leader’s absence.
- Responds to, investigates and documents customer issues as assigned.
- Supports community outreach efforts by assisting with Town and community special events.
- Responds to emergencies or disaster events as required.
- Serves on rotation of on-call duties as assigned.
- Performs all other duties as required.

Other Qualifications
- Knowledge of equipment operation and general maintenance work performed by a municipality.
- Skilled in the operation and use of assigned equipment including mowers, knuckle booms, leaf trucks, sweepers, backhoes, mini excavators, tractors, and bush-hogs, as well as a variety of equipment attachments and tools.
- Ability to make minor adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment.
- Ability to efficiently and safely operate all departmental equipment.
- Ability to identify and schedule equipment maintenance requirements.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with citizens and other employees.
- Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions related to the performance of primary duties.
- General knowledge of work zone safety, lock out/tag out, confined space and trenching and shoring techniques.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking (expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words), hearing (perceiving nature of sounds by ear), and perform repetitive motions.
- Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Work is subject to adverse environmental conditions.
Desirable Education and Experience
- High school diploma or the equivalent and the ability to read and write.
- Two to four years of experience in the operation of medium to heavy duty motorized equipment.
- NCDOT certified flagger designation.
Special Requirements
1. Possess a valid NC Commercial Class B drivers license.
