About the Department

Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED or higher and graduation from an accredited program for medical assistants.
Licenses and Certificates: Texas Class C Driver's License or equivalent from another state.
Position Duties
Under direction, provide patient care management to an assigned clinic in the Department of Public Health.
Minimum Qualifications
Assist patients and perform clerical duties in support of clinic operations. Involves: Conduct front desk registration and insurance verification. Answer telephone, take and relay messages or forward calls to appropriate individuals. Update patient medical records, schedule patient appointments and diagnostic testing, clarify referrals and re-verify appointments for various clinic programs. Provide patients with assistance in filling out forms. Answer questions related to policies and procedures and convey requested information to patients. Prepare reports and document laboratory results in patient records. Compile daily and monthly clinical reports. Collect and record patient payments, complete deposit form and count receipts to prepare bank deposit. Monitor medical office supply inventory. Maintain logs, files and records. Operate under the supervision of physician, nurse practitioner and registered nurse.
Assist clinic staff in the delivery of clinical services. Involves: Follow well defined procedures/protocols to facilitate clinic services and assist clinicians during examinations. Conduct patient intakes, interview patients to obtain medical history, and obtain vital signs. Provide patient education on various topics such as, but not limited to: hygiene, birth control, sexual education, nutrition, immunizations, etc. Prepare exam room and instruments as needed for examination. Provide technical assistance during examination and anticipate instrument needs. Perform patient measurements, tests and screenings such as blood pressure, sputum, hearing, vision, urinalysis, pregnancy, TB, iron, glucose, etc. Perform routine adult venipuncture and routine adult and pediatric capillary sticks. Dispense medications and administer injections, including infant, children and adult immunizations, as ordered by physician verbally, in writing or by standing delegation orders. Prepare infectious waste for disposal. Directly observe therapy to patients with TB disease and report to case manager/RN any abnormal adverse effects prior to medicating patient. May perform other duties as assigned.
