General Description
Performs manual work involved in the securing and removing of ship's dock lines at Port Everglades. Work involves pulling lines from ships attempting to dock and dragging lines to bollards on docks and slipping eyes of docking lines over bollards. Work also involves driving vehicles to pull the vessel's lines when docking and removal of vessel's lines when departing. Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Special Certifications and Licenses
Requires the ability to swim (successful candidate must pass a swim assessment post-offer).
Must possess a valid Florida Class E Driver's License at the time of appointment and maintain for the duration of employment.
Must secure a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within 60 days of employment and maintain for the duration of employment.
Must secure a valid Seaport Business Purpose Credential within 5 business days after start date, and maintain for the duration of employment.
Preferences
2 year of experience handling lines to dock/undock vessels.
2 years of experience as a United States Navy, United States Coast Guard, or Merchant Marine seaman.
Position Duties
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
Docks and sails vessels.
Cleans the docks, trucks, office and berth.
Ties down ships in berth and releases ships from berth.
Catches and throws heaving lines from ships docking.
Pulls mooring lines down the dock and secures to bollards.
Removes mooring lines from bollards.
Drives and maintains line handling equipment.
Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
Involves routine and frequent exposure to traffic; moving machinery.
