About the Department

The Natural and Historic Resources Division (NHRD) of the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), Prince George’s County, Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is seeking a Museum Education and Interpretation Specialist for the Concord Historic Site. This site, which is currently under renovation and development, is one of the newest additions to NHRD’s vast portfolio of historic resources.

Concord is one of four historic sites under the purview of the M-NCPPC Black History Program (BHP), a unit within NHRD. The site will expand the physical and programmatic footprint of BHP, while offering an outstanding and exciting opportunity for NHRD to reimagine how black history is interpreted and presented, moving beyond the traditional confines of the historic house museum format.

Concord is a former tobacco plantation and site of enslavement that will interpret local, state, regional, and national history through the lens of the African American experience, beginning with West African origins, moving to the period of enslavement, and finally, from slavery to freedom.

While the historic house and structures undergo restoration, Concord is activating its outdoor spaces to connect the public with the site’s powerful history. Plans include an interpretive walking loop that explores the landscape’s role in African American life, outdoor classrooms and gathering spaces, agricultural demonstrations, and community-centered public programming.

The Museum Education and Interpretive Specialist will develop and pilot outdoor interpretive programs and visitor experiences that can be launched while the house is under construction. This role is ideal for someone passionate about building community connections and creative programming who can turn outdoor space, archaeological features, and historical narratives into meaningful visitor experiences.

This candidate will be able to support Concord Historic Site in upholding the four strategic pillars of the Natural and Historic Resources Division (NHRD):

Position Duties

  • Collaborate with museum director to shape the long-term interpretive strategy

  • Collaborate on educational public programming, events, tours, and exhibitions

  • Research and create outdoor interpretive content (signage, walking tours, hands-on activities)

  • Engage local schools, organizations, and partners and support community outreach and visitor experience

  • Lead public programs and preview tours

  • Train volunteers or part-time guides for outdoor interpretation

Minimum Qualifications

Key Qualifications:

Required:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with diverse audiences of all ages

  • Highly organized, dependable, and willing to take initiative

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small team

  • Flexibility to work weekends, evenings, and outdoors in various weather conditions

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with inclusive and culturally responsive interpretation

  • Knowledge of educational standards and curriculum

  • Experience with community engagement and collaboration

  • Experience leading tours, educational programs, or community events

  • Problem solver who can recognize and navigate through challenges

  • Comfort with outdoor public speaking and facilitating interactive activities

  • Interest in African American history, museums, or cultural heritage

  • Familiarity with Prince George’s County and its communities


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years old with a valid government issued driver’s license

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher AND 2 or more years of relevant experience; OR 6 years of combined education and experience

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

  • Ability to lift 25 pounds and comfortably navigate stairs

  • Ability to work outdoor events in a variety of weather conditions

Other Qualifications

Position Details:

  • The position is part time

  • Hourly range is 20-30 hours a week as needed, with weekend shifts and some evenings required

  • Pay Range: $17.00- $26.01

  • Position does not qualify for benefits

  • A background investigation will be completed prior to hire
